As Jim Engineer in Chicago is putting it, all of us with a "Next
Generation" concern are involved. Young Adults, Emerging
Professionals, Active Core, Future Leaders ... And what are your
suggestions for a name?
Whatever we call ourselves, let's do something wonderful and have a
grand time doing it.
Best,
Natalie

A few of us met for dinner this evening to finalize our decision on a
kickoff event for the WZCC Youth Initiative. We thought a great first
event to attract youth would be a trip to Atlantic City (AC). Here's
the reasoning behind this decision:
1. We wanted the first event to gain traction with the youth and
appeal to a wide spectrum of ages/interests.
2. A popular WZCC trip would help raise awareness. One of the things
we discussed at the last committee meeting was that not a lot of youth
a) knew what the WZCC was, and b) realized that the WZCC could cater
to their needs. Putting together a youth trip under the flag of the
WZCC could address both of those issues.
3. We have a captive audience. We could speak with the group during
the bus ride to inform them about the WZCC and get feedback on ideas
for the next "professional" event. It may be easier to get their buy
in if they feel like they've had some input on the topic.
4. It would be fun and promotes interaction amongst the youth!
We would like your feedback on this event. It's certainly different
from the previous WZCC events, but we think it's important to do
something different to really get the ball rolling on this youth
project. In the end, we're still working towards the same objective.
Kaizad was at dinner with us and told us we can use the list to
advertise the event. The list is a little outdated, but it should be
a good starting point. We're also going to use Facebook to announce
the event.
Shaun is going to start to look into the logistics for the trip. We
were thinking of a 1 day + 1 night trip around mid-November. Of
course, we would like your input before we make any definite plans.
One question, do we have a budget to work with for these types of
events? We would expect the participants to pay for the majority of
the costs, but partially subsidizing the trip could help attract more
youth. We eventually want these youth to sign up for WZCC
memberships. However, it might be more appropriate to ask people to
sign up once they feel comfortable with the mission of the WZCC.
Please let us know what you think. We'd appreciate any feedback/
comments/suggestions.
Thanks,
Zubin

Dear Arnaz,
Hi there, I am back from Illinois. Do you please have names and e-mail
addresses for who to invite into the wzzc_ny_youth Google Group?

Hello Zubin and thanks for the terrific Kickoff brainstorming! We were
in Illinois (for my folks' 50th anniversary!), so it has taken me
awhile to get back to you.
Basically, I have two thoughts,
A. With an upcoming WZCC-NY trip to Boston with WZCC-Boston on Oct
27-28, there is a lot going on for a trip in November, so let's see
what works best.
There are a couple things to think about, a) the Boston crowd is
aiming to make their event Youth-friendly b) it's sort of a kick-off
for them, so the NY-ers can really give them a boost to make it a
successful event.
It would help if any WZCC-NY Youth wanted to join in and come. I think
there is some help with accomodation costs (by way of local hosts).
I am not yet sure if Rusi and I are going on the bus or by car. But if
some Youth come on the bus, that's fun for sure ...
B. I am wide-open on the type of events we do or where we go, so I'm
positive on Atlantic City. And, I hope our events have fantastic ties
to some aspect of business and or entrepreneurship.
Together, the Youth could work the trip into a team-project with a
deliverable we can put at our web site (or use individually in
academic or professional life); or do something really unique for the
participants.
Without over-straining ourselves, we can create depth and substance.
Powerpoints, iPods, summaries, resource lists, games, photo-logs ...
Here's ideas,
- What is going on with Atlantic City's local economy and social
situation? How is the business community involved to address concerns
or to celebrate good things? In the visit, what or how can we see
reflecting the local economics?
- Local economics Part Two: Jim Rogers in "Adventure Capitalist"
studies "facts on the ground" to decide what to do with his investment
capital (http://www.jimrogers.com/). If Jim Rogers were on the
Atlantic City trip, what would he arrive back home thinking? Why?
- Atlantic City is known for casino businesses, for one thing. What do
they take and what are their special features? Do we have people in
our community who are or were experts in the domain (hint, Yes ...
wouldn't it be great if they were taking us through one of the
casinos and giving us the inside-scoop on operations ...)?
- Why not someone with gumption call up The Donald and ask him to join
the trip? It would be interesting to see what he would say to the Z
Youth about building businesses in Atlantic City, as it was one of his
special interests.
ok, some ideas, but for sure there are plenty of ideas. The whole trip
will be a great time when we do it!
Folks, I have put a document announcing the WZCC-Boston trip at the
WZCC_NY_Youth Google Group where you can download it. Their line-up of
activity looks great!
Check out my extra-special graphic at http://wzcc_ny_youth.googlegroups.com/web/wzcc_ny_youth.jpg.
Take care and have a great evening Zubin and everyone.
Best,
Natalie
