Dear WZCC_NY_Youth:

Hello, hope everyone enjoyed Navroze and has a great New Year.

A Harper Lecture on Bio-tech is coming up. Please let me know if any of
you would like to come as my guest.

Details of the event are appended. Thanks folks.

Best Regards,
Natalie

Harper Lecture 2008: Northern New Jersey
April 13, 2008

Where Biotechnology and Microelectronics Meet: Creating Cell-Based
Technologies

Both biotechnology and microelectronics are built on mature and
sophisticated technological foundations. These technologies are distinct
and largely independent of one another. In microelectronics, for
example, inorganic and metallic materials are assembled into layered
devices, whereas in biology, cells self-assemble in complex,
three-dimensional ways. In microelectronics, information is transmitted
through electrical currents and voltages, whereas biology relies on
molecules to recognize one another and chemical reactions to transfer
information. In a lecture specifically designed for Northern New Jersey
alumni, parents and friends, Professor Mrksich, will outline the
opportunities for bridging these two technical worlds in devices that
combine biological and electrical components. How can we integrate the
cells of mammals with electronic materials? What does the future hold
for these applications in sensing and computation?
____________
Milan Mrksich is Professor of Chemistry at the University of Chicago and
an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Professor
Mrksich is a leader in the science and application of materials that
contact biological environments. His laboratory has pioneered several
technologies, including strategies to integrate living cells with
microelectronic devices, methods to enable high throughput assays for
drug discovery, and model systems for understanding the interactions of
cells with their tissue environments. Professor Mrksich is an active
advisor in government and industry. He currently serves as Chair of the
Defense Sciences Research Council—an advisory group for the Defense
Department—and on the Board of Governors for Argonne National
Laboratory. He also founded and serves as an adviser to several
biotechnology start-up companies.

Hi Shaun,

Rusi is going blazes at his real estate, so that's good.

I had knee surgery, ice, ice, ice, and physical therapy. Got to see
about work now that the knee is better.

Thank goodness the sunshine comes out sometimes.

Hope you are ok. Visit or call whenever it's good for you.

Isn't this Fed stuff amazing?

Best,
Natalie
