Hi again well my email appears to have gone through so I'll tell you a little more about my family.  Hanna Maria Soroka was born in Plock in 1827 a daughter of Izrael Bela and Zyssa Soroka

Hertz Wolf Gerszteyn was born in Wyszogrod in 1820-a son of Szlama and Ruchla Gerszteyn--he was a Tailor. Hanna and Hertz were married on 21st September, 1845. His father had died but his mother-Ruchla attended. Their witnesses were Lewin Frenkel and Michal Rura. The Rabbi was Hertz Halbersztadt.

They had 4 daughters born --Elizabeth, Leah, Maria and Deborah. In about 1849-the family left Poland to come to London and settled in Whitechapel. Hertz changed his name to Samuel Harris and worked as a tailor. In about 1853-Hanna's mother-Zyssa (Sara)--born in 1797--followed her family to Whitechapel. Sara 's husband Izrael had died in 1852. Sara was blind and was accompanied by her son Emmanuel and possibly daughter Elizabeth and another son-Davis. Sara lived with Hannah and Samuel who by now had another 4 children-Rebecca, Abraham, Jacob, Rachel. Samuel died in 1865 leaving Hannah pregnant with her last child-born in 1865-Harris. Sara died in 1872. Emmanuel, Elizabeth and Davis lived in another part of the East End of London --Mile End.

I am descended from Rachel Harris who married Charles Augustus Lupson, I have cousins I have known all my life descended from Leah who married a Charles Spiers; I have one cousin and her family descended from Harris Harris and have found cousins in Cinncinatti , Ohio descended from Jacob Harris who married a Catherine Joel and emigrated in 1905. Deborah who was married to a Harris Dover emigrated to Nassau, Bahamas in 1879 with her 3 children but there was no mention in the passenger list of Harris her husband. Then she was found travelling to New York where she disappeared. Well that is all I know so hopefully someone will know my family and tell me more.  Regards Janet Webb.

My BAUM and KUMEC ancestors came from Tykocin (1700s) to Wyszogrod. They moved in the early 1800s from Wyszogrod to various other places in Poland such as Konskie and Zakri. And beyond...

I would like to find out what life was like in Wyszogrod and Plock for my ancestors, and why they had to leave to come to England. Was it because of racial tension or was it the fear of being conscripted into the Russian army, bec
cause  they must have had a worse life in London at that time sharing one room in tenement blocks. Also how much would it have cost and how did they get enough money to pay for passage?

From my understanding the motifs may vary from one account to the other, but they all share the same triggers: jewish life was always difficult in Europe. There were few (big cities) where jews may have found temporary and relative quiet, and thus their economic situation was way better than their brethren in the more poorer shtetls. In one way or another, economic sanctions existed way too often. Hatred towards jews was, of course, another factor. People presumably always nurtured the idea that moving to a different location things will be different. This was held true especially for the "new World" of the Americas, both North and South. (My family left to South America at some point, and it was referred to, in their times, as the "Goldene Medine" (the golden country/territory). I am quite sure people leaving for North America labeled USA the Goldene Medine as well.

What's interesting in my opinion is that the above, was ultimately what befell all sojourns of the Jewish People since being expelled from Israel (something just commemorated days ago in Tisha b'Av).

Thank you for the information. probably my family came to the uk because there may have been other previous family members that came here. Knowing what I know about the appalling conditions in London in the 1800's it surprised me they would want to come here but I suppose everything would be secondary to trying to save your family. Regards Janet
