One of the people in my OLLI Class (classes for old folks at Casper College) showed me a picture of a Summer Tanager that was in their backyard a couple of weeks ago. It didn't stay long, but their photo was pretty good.
The class field trip was to the top of Casper Mountain where we had the usual mountain birds, but missed a couple I had expected to see. I didn't hear or see a Western Tanager, which I had expected to find. It was such a nice day, many of the birds were back in the trees and hard to see. Below is a list of what we did hear or see.
Flicker (but no other woodpeckers)
Western Flycatcher (only heard)
Dusky Flycatcher (I heard it, but it didn't sing enough to point it out to anyone else)
Western Wood-pewee (only heard)
Tree Swallow
Warbling Vireo (heard only)
Crow
Clark's Nutcracker
Mountain Chickadee (I saw one, but it didn't stay long enough to show it to anyone else)_
House Wren
Mountain Bluebird (great views)
Robin
Townsend's Solitaire (it sang once, and I never saw it)
Audubon's Warbler (we never got a good view of one)
Green-tailed Towhee
Chipping Sparrow
Gray-headed Junco (great views)
Red Crossbill (lots around, but we never got good views of them)
Pine Siskin
