Hi all,

Jonathan Lautenbach found and photographed what appears to be a TUNDRA BEAN-GOOSE this afternoon at Fort Caspar Historic Site and Museum in Casper. It was with a small flock of Canada Geese on the mowed lawn next to the river, just north of the museum.

Separating Tundra Bean-Goose from Taiga Bean-Goose can be very challenging. While we await further opinions from birders more experienced with these species, I think that this bird looked like a good candidate for Tundra based on its relatively short bill with a small orange patch, rounded head, and short, thick neck. Based on behavior and lack of any markings or visible feather wear, it seems very plausible to me that this is a wild bird rather than an escapee. If so, it would be a first state record for Wyoming and one of very few records for central North America.

Kudos to Jonathan for an incredible find!

Good birding,
Don

Updates about the gooses would be appreciated. Found or not found! Thanks.
