Breastfeeding: biological dialogues

Online Sept 15 - Dec 15 2022
Speaker Focus: Dr Nikki Mills

How amazing is the tongue? Dr Nikki Mills

Two fantastic presentations by Dr Nikki Mills, a Paediatric ENT Consultant, will provide you with new and exciting information to help inform practices to support the families you work with!

The functional anatomy of sucking during breastfeeding: How amazing is the tongue!

Understanding how babies suck during breastfeeding requires a sound knowledge of anatomy and how all of the “parts” move and work. Breastfeeding is a 3-dimensional symphony of motion, with the infant’s tongue playing a key role in successful milk transfer.

The functional anatomy of swallowing and airway protection in the breastfeeding infant: Understanding the impact of positioning

Dynamic imaging will be shown of the breastfeeding swallow (both with cine MRI and endoscopy). The impact of gravity (positioning of the infant) on the infant’s breathing and fluid dynamics during swallowing helps us understand how specific positioning may be used therapeutically to improve an infant’s breathing and airway protection during breastfeeding.
