Hello Marguerite,

Black Breastfeeding Week is starting Thursday, and this is the final nine days of National Breastfeeding Month! We continue to celebrate, gather, and take action in support of breastfeeding and human milk feeding opportunities and policies that encourage the nourishing of our country's youngest humans! This is the final email from USBC amplifying the efforts of organizers of celebrations during this month, including resources and action opportunities. Many more are shared in the Weekly Wire newsletter, so please be sure you are subscribed. You can also submit items for the USBC to share in our newsletter and on social media. We hope you have had a great month so far. Let's all raise our voices in celebration of Black Breastfeeding Week!

August 25-31 is Black Breastfeeding Week! This year's theme is BBW 2022: 10 Years, A New Foundation.

From Black Breastfeeding Week organizers: "10 years of Black Breastfeeding Week, and we're just getting started. For #BBW22, we're celebrating the countless stories and families- past, present & future. Together, we've shifted the narrative and optics, supported and uplifted each other…and it's still just the beginning. The new foundation of lactation support is built on racial equity, cultural empowerment, and community engagement and is powered by our collective resilience. Please share and help spread the word. We look forward to celebrating with you!"

LEARN

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity released an Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IYCF-E) Toolkit. The comprehensive new resource can be used by emergency preparedness and response personnel, families, and the public to ensure that children are safely fed when disaster strikes. Highlights from the IYCF-E Toolkit include:

  • Printable handouts on topics like hand expressing and cup feeding
  • Emergency preparation checklist for families with infants and young children
  • Guidelines for creating safe and family-friendly spaces in emergency shelters
  • Information for the public on donations during emergencies

IYCF-E is a critical topic for human milk feeding and breastfeeding advocates, so please download and share!

ACT

Raise your voice! Do you have a moment to take quick action with us?

Contact your Members of Congress in support of the DEMAND Act.  Human milk is a critical component of food security and lactation support must be part of the basic standard of care for America's 3.7 million infants during an emergency. The DEMAND Act (Delivering Essentials to Mothers Amid Natural Disasters Act) would ensure that lactation support services and supplies are eligible expenses for emergency assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Critical Needs Assistance program.

Please take two minutes to help us show Congress that there is strong bipartisan support for this bill!

Thank you for all that you do, and have done during this National Breastfeeding Month!

~ the USBC team

Please make a donation in support of USBC advocacy efforts on legislation like the DEMAND Act. We are striving for 500 contributions during August, with 200 of them as recurring donations. We are not yet in sight of reaching our goal. Please make a donation of $10 or more today! Thank you to everyone who has made their contribution during this NBM.
