Major changes will be coming in 5 years in terms of horizontal and vertical datums.

Dear FGCS Members,As you are aware, the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) is updating the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS) of the United States. One of the major components of this modernization effort is the replacement of our current national datums, the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83) and the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88). By the end of January 2017, we plan to release to the public the decisions listed below on the fundamental scientific issues and naming conventions for this modernization effort. The public release of this information is in preparation for our 2017 Geospatial Summit to be held April 24 - 25, in Silver Spring, Maryland. Here is a brief summary of the decisions regarding the fundamental scientific issues and naming conventions for the NSRS modernization effort to date:
1) The three NAD 83 reference frames -- NAD 83(2011), NAD 83(PA11), and NAD 83(MA 11) -- will be replaced with four (4) independent plate-fixed terrestrial reference frames (TRFs), one for each of these tectonic plates: Pacific, North American, Caribbean, and Mariana.
2) The four TRFs will be named:
• North American Terrestrial Reference Frame of 2022 (NATRF2022)
• Caribbean Terrestrial Reference Frame of 2022 (CTRF2022)
• Pacific Terrestrial Reference Frame of 2022 (PTRF2022)
• Mariana Terrestrial Reference Frame of 2022 (MTRF2022)3) A geopotential datum will be created to contain all of the information necessary to provide mutually consistent orthometric heights, geoid undulations, gravity anomalies, deflections of the vertical, and all other geodetic coordinates related to the gravity field. This geopotential datum will be named the North American-Pacific Geopotential Datum of 2022 (NAPGD2022)4) Within NAPGD2022, a variety of products will exist. The most prominent will be a time dependent model of the geoid, provided in three regions. The first region will cover the entirety of North America, Central America, Greenland, and the Caribbean. The second region will cover American Samoa; and the third region will cover Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The name of this model will be GEOID2022.NGS will continue to share this and other announcements via our web page (https://geodesy.noaa.gov/datums/newdatums/), email, and through other outreach materials, as we prepare for the 2017 Geospatial Summit. Please see the attached January 2017 NSRS Modernization News for reference. We encourage continuing discussions about these and other related decisions at future FGCS meetings. Sincerely,Juliana P. BlackwellDirector, NGS
