Updates to FloatCanvas

Hi all,

In response to a bug report, I (finally!) did some updates to FloatCanvas. Nothing big, but it needed a lot of updating to work with newer versions of Python, wxPython, numpy, etc....

I've only tested it with one OS and one Python version, so if any of you can give it a try elsewhere, that would be great.

@Robin: Even without more testing, I think it's worth merging -- it's pretty broken as is!

NOTE: it would use a lot more help -- let me know if anyone wants to do any more testing / updating, etc.
