Hi,

This article claims that Windows 8 will finally allow the creation of
a 'modern' UI from C++ code. This could be an opportunity for
wxWidgets to enable multiplatform development with a modern look and
feel on Windows. Although I personally like the Win32 look, many
others see it as an obstacle for serious product development.

Very interesting, and if this is true (I'm not sure what information the
article is based on) it could indeed be extremely good news for
wxWidgets. Obviously a port to DirectUI is going to have to bypass the
XML parts and won't be able to advantage of all the new stuff, but
making C++ a first class citizen again would be a very cheering move.
I'd certainly be happy to put some effort into working on such a port.
We will need to extend the API to take advantage of touch screens,
compasses, new touch-friendly controls, and so on, since it's obvious
that these things are become mainstream.

It's amazing how secretive Microsoft are being about all this and I have
no idea why they would punt the absurd notion of Javascript as the main
development language for Windows 8. Somehow I don't think the next
version of MS Office will be written in Javascript.

Regards,

Julian
