Having seen the enormous success of the Blender Foundation in funding and developing the free open source 3D animation software I was thinking if the wxWidgets team would consider organizing itself in a similar fashion. A foundation would even allow some of the developers to work on wxWidgets full time.

Even though mobile apps are all the rage at this time, I still believe that desktop applications will remain the mainstay of computing for quite some time.

Hi,

Yes, we did try that :-) We had Mitch Kapor and his people working on it
for a bit. However it foundered on the issue of assigning copyright,
which was thought to be a Good Idea at the time by people advising us
but probably wasn't. Borland was also involved, before dropping out
without letting us know, and a Borland employee who contacted me years
later thought that Borland just might have had an agenda re. wxWidgets
ownership that we didn't know about. Anyway, it was a big disaster that
OSAF spent some time undoing, and even had it been a success, there
would have been a lot of tedious paperwork and formality which I'm not
sure we can really sustain. It would be great to have one or more people
working on it but there's never been a hint of a suggestion (apart from
some funding from Borland 10 years ago) that this could ever be realistic.

Regards,

Julian

Thanks for summarising this experience without any bitterness that I would
have certainly brought to the discussion if I was doing this myself.

I think the only realistic thing would be to join some existing
umbrella organization to be able to receive tax-deducible donations such as
SPI (http://www.spi-inc.org/) or SFC (http://sfconservancy.org/)...

This approach for funding works well for situations where you are dealing
with big crowds of end-users which see the gains from using your
application in their life. wxWidgets is not really visible to the end
users, only to the developers (a lot smaller numbers) that are
incorporating it into their apps. We are at the wrong end of the
food-chain ...

It might happen, but the companies involved must be carefully selected
(I can trust TT-Solutions, AG Concepts, Anthemion and few wx oriented
companies to start it). But as pointed above, th hard part I believe
would be legal stuffs and Banking issues may be!
