I did, but mostly for pushing 2.6.4, which will now be a lower priority
than 2.8 in the light of other events mentioned above.

Ok, that's fair enough. What we'll probably do in that case is compile
the latest 2.6 from CVS and give that to our users. (It's in a
centralised environment so that's relatively easy.) Thanks to Chris
Elliot, by the way, for backporting Vadim's fix to bug #1064351 to 2.6.
That was the one that was causing us problems. And thanks Vadim for
letting me know about your plans.
