first time subversion connect

I'm trying to connect to subversion (for the first time), to check out
the latest stuff... but instead of connecting, svn tells me:
subversion/libsvn_ra_dav/util.c:826: (apr_err=175002)
svn: PROPFIND request failed on '/svn/wx/wxWidgets/trunk'
subversion/libsvn_ra_dav/util.c:296: (apr_err=175002)
svn: PROPFIND of '/svn/wx/wxWidgets/trunk': Could not read status line:
Connection reset by peer (http://svn.wxwidgets.org)
I've gone over the possible problems, including proxy settings, and have
drawn a blank. Has anyone had this problem before?
I'm using Mac OS X 10.4, trying to get the following checkout to work:
svn co http://svn.wxwidgets.org/svn/wx/wxWidgets/trunk ~/destination
Any ideas from anyone would be great!
