I maintain the pkgsrc port of prusa-slicer. After upgrading to wxWidgets-3.2.9, the EGL canvas fails to be created. Due to $REASONS I'm currently relying on software rendering (Mesa llvmpipe). A simple patch to allow calling eglCreatePlatformWindowSurface on EGL 1.4 brings back working behaviour.

Sorry, I don't understand how can this be a regression: in 3.2.8 we had this code:
so it could never work with EGL < 1.5 AFAICS. Are you sure you didn't use a patched version of wx before?
Also, eglCreatePlatformWindowSurface() documentation says
eglCreatePlatformWindowSurface is supported only if the EGL version is 1.5 or greater.
so I have serious doubts about whether it's a good idea to use it with EGL < 1.5.
Finally, one of the goals of the changes in 3.2.9 was to bring support for EGL 1.4 and using eglCreateWindowSurface() for it is supposed to work. Do you have any idea why it doesn't for you?

You're right; I appear to have had pieces of a06400f
in my local patches against 3.2.8 that I'd completely forgotten about. I must've run into a similar problem and merely allowed/forced EGL 1.4 to run.
It seems if I leave the code to call eglCreateWindowSurface, I trip the assert:
./src/unix/glegl.cpp(704): assert ""Assert failure"" failed in CreateSurface(): Unable to create EGL surface
This is odd; I have test code just using EGL calling eglCreateWindowSurface that works fine…
Looking at the EGL code, the major difference between eglCreateWindowSurface and eglCreatePlatformWindowSurface is that the latter calls _fixupNativeWindow on the window arg:

Indeed, changing the call to deref the pointer works:

Thanks, it looks like this is indeed wrong. As this call was added 602b80d (Support EGL 1.4 instead of previously required 1.5, 2025-11-23) let me cc @dsa-t just in case I'm missing something. But if not, we need to apply this fix both in master and in 3.2.

Ah, wait, I know what I'm missing: the current code is correct for Wayland but doesn't work with X11. The fix above makes it work with X11 but crashes with Wayland. How wonderful...

Please check if 8a41fd0 (Fix creating wxGLCanvas when using EGL 1.4 with X11, 2026-04-27) really fixes this for you — if it does, I'll backport it to 3.2 too. TIA!
