To clarify this Facebook post from four years ago, John C. Lilly used a flotation tank in the proximity of the dolphins he was trying to strike up a telepathic conversation (suspended above them as I recall) and he didn't just give them LSD...

Carl Sagan had something to do with backing this experiment in inter-species comms, but he never intended that psychedelics be involved, much less telepathy. He wanted the experimenters to teach the dolphins to speak English.

In the meantime, Lilly believed he'd established communications and that he and the dolphins were mentally engaged in contract negotiations re how long they would remain in captivity.

Lilly was a pretty straight-laced scientist starting out, worth reading his prose.

... Also, the three ws in wwwanderers, rarely used except here, was an allusion to World Wide Web (www, w3), a new kid on the block at the time.

Not meaning he gave them other drugs, just that he dropped a lotta acid himself, so they'd like, be on the same wavelength if ya know what I mean.

John was good friends with Ralph Abraham the mathematician at UCSD.  Ralph was also an ISEPP speaker, one who joined us for Terry's Math Summit in 1997.   https://grunch.net/archives/130
