At the potluck on Friday, some of us (perhaps especially Nirel, Gordon,
and Lew) were discussing frustrations over homelessness in Portland. As
I mentioned then, two days later, an organization I help with (Humanists
of Greater Portland) was slated to have a presentation on that topic by
Doug Marshall of Hope for the Homeless Foundation. The presentation has
now transpired, and the recording is here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suVddq4SHuo

(There is a thoughtful reading at the beginning on another topic from an
HGP member. If you want to skip to introduction of Doug, start at 6:07.)

The first few minutes of the presentation sounded very much like an echo
of the frustrations I had heard at the potluck, and he has some
significant analysis of the issues.

Interesting to learn at 19:10 that 40% of USers are homeless in the sense they've defined (one paycheck away from losing a home). I really don't understand why Americans brag about being the wealthiest / most powerful nation on earth. I've never believed that.

Sure, the USA is home to some rich cliques and militant drug runners (the 0.1%), but that's got nothing to do with your average homeless.  Judging by so many statistics, the USA is dirt poor, having squandered its wealth to become the world's biggest debtor.

Kirby et al,  superb presentation that gives me hope that someone understands where we're at on homelessness and has a sensible solution.  $531M was spent in the tri-counties on homelessness last year....$71K/homeless person...and little to show for it!  That amount must be a record for a region our size (Denver, city and county, about Portland's population, is only spending $40M this year, likely with better results).

Thanks, Kirby, for passing this along. I'm distributing the YouTube link widely.

Thanks, Gordon. Glad you found it interesting. It did seem (to me) to be
among the most informative of those we (Humanists of Greater Portland)
have held on the topic. (You can find others we've had on homelessness
in Portland here:
https://www.youtube.com/@PortlandHumanists/search?query=homeless . From
memory, other ones which seemed to impress me the most were Bybee Lakes
Hope Center (aka Wapato) by Alan Evans, Central City Concern by Juliana
Lukasik, Harm Reduction for the Homeless by Dr. Sharon Meieran, and
Homeless Youth by Don Schweitzer.)

Since I am in charge of the tech crew holding these weekly presentations
(and specifically, Zoom host, camera, and sound), I'd be happy to hear
any feedback you may have on the overall quality, etc. Please feel free
to drop by in person or tune into Zoom any week you like (see
portlandhumanists.org), and/or check our other videos there or at the
link above on any number of interesting topics.
