Unlike many other sectors in the South African economy, the wholesale and retail sector has actually experienced steady growth with new jobs created. The sector is highly monopolised and dominated by four major companies – Shoprite-Checkers, Pick ‘n Pay, Woolworths and increasingly Massmart that was taken over by international giant, Walmart.

However, over the past thirty years there have also been structural changes in the wholesale and retail sector that have impacted on the nature of work and of course the workers themselves who are mainly women.
