This year there has been much controversy surrounding the leadership of FIFA and the alleged corruption scandal. The corruption allegations relate to how World Cup bids are made and won, with countries, including South Africa’s bid committee accused of paying bribes in order to secure votes of FIFA members. Two country bid committees of forthcoming soccer World Cup tournaments to be held in 2018 – Russia and 2022 in Qatar have been accused of bribery and corruption too. However, while the scandal of bribery and corruption has received much media attention all over the world and by the US’ law agencies, the even bigger scandal and ongoing atrocity of the World Cup construction workers’ poor and unsafe conditions of employment have received very little attention and outcry.
