Cosatu and its trade union affiliates have reached a crisis point, riddled by political factionalism and infighting with potential for a major split and realignment within the union movement. The issues that have divided Cosatu in recent times, such as trade union political independence and democracy are not new. Over the years, since Cosatu’s formation in December 1985 after five years of unity talks, there have been several instances of political conflict and divisions around these questions.
