Hello,

I am looking for any references to socks in poems, letters or any kind of source for an MA project.

I think it could be an illuminating topic so any advice/suggestions for articles would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

What a strange topic! However, I can tell you off the top of my head that Wilfred Owen asked his mother by letter to send him socks in the trenches- I haven't got the reference with me, but look at Edmund Blunden's Memoir.

Yes, a strange topic indeed! It reminds me of a suggestion made by Wyndham Lewis made that someone should write about clothes of the war.

But, Sassoon's line, of course from 'Glory of women' :

'O German mother dreaming by the fire,
While you are knitting socks to send your son
His face is trodden deeper in the mud'.

Hope this helps - keep us posted.
