Internationally renowned open source software advocate, Jon ‘maddog’ Hall will speak in Fairmont, W.Va. on September 22, 2011 at the Robert H. Mollohan Research Center at the I-79 technology Park in Fairmont, WV.
The free event is sponsored by createTank, a local open source software engineering company, and the West Virginia High Technology Consortium Foundation. The seminar is the first of a series of discussions about open source software and its potential for economic development.
“We feel strongly about the promise of open source software and how it can invigorate our local economy,” said John Joseph Roets, co-owner and vice president for software architecture at createTank. “If you look at the really successful technology sectors in the U.S. and in other countries the most successful are built on a foundation of open source technology. West Virginia can and should be a part of that.”
Mr. Hall’s talk is titled Free and Open Source Software in Government, Education, and Business.
The discussion will examine how using open source technology is not about cutting the costs of software, but extending the quality of the solution. This talk will discuss these issues, illustrated by case studies of how FOSS software's return on investment is greater than closed-source software.
