I just measured the time taken from a trigger on D2 to start of the sample on a scope- around 5ms. Seems OK.

Interesting! That is a little longer then I would expect, but had never tested it with a scope. My understanding is that humans can typically perceive more then 10ms of latency, so 5 seems decent enough.

It's actually possible that the latency is lower using midi. There are a few asynchronous queues that the gpio events go through before getting to the actual task that plays the sounds.
