USBHID: hid_open failed

Hi Folks,

Been running on simulator mode for several weeks. I redid the
configuration and change from Simulator to WH1080. I attached my
WH1080 to my USB port on the slug. Rebooted the slug and when I start
wview I get the following errors...any help would be appreciated:

Starting wview daemons:
htmlgend[1200]: <1327166642745> : system init failed!
wvalarmd[1201]: <1327166642781> : wviewd process is not running -
aborting!
wvcwopd[1202]: <1327166642825> : wviewd process not running -
aborting!

wview/wviewd.pid does not exist - aborting!
wviewsshd[1205]: <1327166642983> : wviewd process not running -
aborting!

aborting!

my /var/log/syslog shows the below:

hid_open failed!

I would first check dmesg to see if it sees the device get plugged in
and a USB dev created for it.

dmesg displays the below when I plug in the weather console:

usb 2-1: new low speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3
usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

Oh...and in /dev the following showed up after I plugged it in:

crw-rw---- 1 root root 253, 9 Jan 22 09:05 usbdev2.3_ep81
crw-rw---- 1 root root 253, 10 Jan 22 09:05 usbdev2.3_ep00

do a 'lsusb -v' and post the part of that has your station.

'lsusb -v' returns absolutely nothing :(

Do you get an error that lsusb isn't installed or not found?

I installed usbutils. But even then when I did the 'lsusb -v' no
errors and not output just a blank line:

root@kncwestj4$ usbutils -v
root@kncwestj4$

Last night I installed Debian and wview. Next weekend I'll attach
this second slug to my WS1080..if I have no issues then I'll just
start using Debian and good riddens to SlugOS.

I'm having the exact problem with the same symptoms as described above, even down to lsusb not returning any data.

Anyone have any new tips for troubleshooting?

no symptoms described "above".. the usual first step for usb issue is get a proper usb cable, not the cheapest-possible one included with the product

No where in the land of google have I found any reference to needing a better quality USB cable to get this to work on a linux box (NSLU2 in this case).  That and it works just fine on Windows.

perhaps a more direct search in the wview archives would give you better results. this is a well-known problem.
can't speak for windoze, i have nothing to do with it

Only way I found to get wview to work on an Nslu2 when using wmrusb was to install Debian. Unslung and SlugOS both gave hid open error.
