HTX Editor?

Can anyone recommmend a good (and free) editor to modify the standard
web offering? I'm currently editting the .htx files with vi, and
that's a pain.

I use gedit on my Archlinux machine and like it very much.

Have a look at jEdit. Available for Win and Linux (and Mac I think).
Lots of plugins to do practically anything you want.

If you're looking for a text editor on Mac it's TextWrangler or it's pay-for big brother BBEdit or nothing. :) (I use Textwrangler for 99.9% of all my text work, even in Windows as it can save with windows line breaks)

I use Jedit everywhere - OSX, linux, winblows. It has some basic html intelligence.  wview was 99% developed with Jedit!

I use Coda on my Mac for serious web development.
