does anyone know how to reset the fineoffset ws2080 remotely?

periodically our ws2080 console will lock up. the display is fine,
and it still communicates with the instruments, but it stops
communicating over usb. when this happens, the wview log file
contains messages like this:

Jan 19 13:23:02 saga wviewd[1219]: <1326997382294> : WH1080: read data
block failed!

sometimes we see these messages in the log file, but the ws2080 seems
to recover and everything goes back to normal. but every once in
awhile the ws2080 does not come back, even after a week or two.

i have tried restarting wview with a '/etc/init.d/wview restart'. no
joy. when it starts up again wview reports 'stationInit: wh1080Init
failed!'

i have tried unplugging the usb cable, then plugging it back in. no
joy.

i have tried both of the above. no joy.

i tried removing the batteries so that the console only gets power
from usb, then do a power reset on the usb using this:

echo suspend > /sys/bus/usb/devices/1-1/power/level

but apparently that is not the right magic and/or my usb hub does not
support power cycling.

only when the console is power cycled and wview restarted do things go
back to normal.

of course data stored in the console is lost on the power cycle, so
that's a bummer.

this is not a big deal for the home station, but we have another
station on an island 5 hours away with no access for months at a time,
so its not so easy to pull the batteries on that one.

one more note - wview seems to handle this condition better than
wfrog. wfrog would crap out almost every other day, but with wview it
is more like every 3rd month.

Not making any guarantees, but Ambient Weather does have a 'Chat Now'
support feature on their site that might help.

Also, the WS2080 has an A/C power connection, you could possibly try
something like this(If I remember right, with A/C yu could eliminate
the batteries altogether, I don't think they're required.):
http://www.remotepowerswitch.com/web-remotepowercontrol.html

We have something similar here for our servers so if I need to force a
reboot I can, you could plug both in, and then connect to the device
via an online connection, and cycle power for both the computer and
the console. Not the most elegant solution, but from the sound of your
setup, it might work out.

Of course, you could just stick a webcam in front of Ye Olde 'Weather
Rock', too... :-)

Just spotted this. Let me know if you ever find out how to remotely reset. My WS-2080 locks up every few days and it is really annoying. The USB interface becomes non-responsive indefinitely. I'm tempted to open up the case and inspect the hardware to reverse engineer the configuration.
I've gotten it into a hard lockup state before where when powering it will display max temperature (140.0F) both inside and out and stay there.
There is a means to do a "factory reset" on the device by holding the 'Up' button down for 30 seconds. Obviously this is a manual step and thus sub-optimal but it does clear any error conditions.
