Dear Users,

A new 260418 update of WSJT-X Improved 3.1.0 is ready for download. It brings the following changes compared to 3.1.0 260228:
  • Slightly improved decoding performance:
    • Added AP type 7 (a7) decoding technology, sub-sample DT refinement, and a 4th pass after a7 for both FT4 and FT2.
    • Better timing of the FT2 decoder, resulting in a higher probability of decoding late FT2 messages.
    • Optimized baseline calculation, effective for FT4, FT2 and FT8 (STD). The filter edges are now automatically optimized according to the actual passband of your transceiver. This results in better decoding performance and fewer false decodes when the Wide Graph limits are poorly set.
  • Better support of Worked All States or similar awards:
    • In addition to grid mapping, a new method has been added to map U.S. callsigns to U.S. states. It uses a database containing FCC data.
    • This allowed adding two new highlighting and alert categories: "New US State" and "New US State on Band".
    • At startup, the program reads any <STATE:2> tags in the wsjtx_log.adi file, and such tags are now written when logging a QSO with a station from U.S.A. Missing tags are automatically retrieved from the database.
    • Users can easily update the callsign_states database using the new function at Settings | Colors.
  • The 8 adjustable band hopping frequencies can now be used either for FT8 or FT2. Right-click on the checkboxes to toggle between FT8 and FT2. For FT2, the color of the spin box changes to that used for the mode label.
  • Added an option to clear the Band Activity window after changing mode.
  • WSPR messages are now also sent to PSK Reporter if both "Enable PSK Reporter Spotting" and "Upload spots"are enabled.
  • The Settings window can now be minimized much further, which improves usability on small screens. If the window is too small to display all the controls, scroll bars will appear so you can still access all of them.
  • Echo mode: The estimated signal degradation in dB (Dgrd) is printed to screen and written to the "all_echo.txt" file.
  • QMAP and MAP65 are now included in the Linux installation packages. QMAP is fully operational, however MAP65 on Linux is still experimental.
  • Multilingual alert voices now work out of the box. The necessary files are included in the installation packages, so no additional language pack is required anymore.
  • The itone data is now added to the UDP status message packet. This feature is useful for DDS transceivers as they no longer need to rely on the AFP-FSK technique for direct digital synthesis of the correct messages.
  • Support of the PWR and SWR feature for some frequently used Elecraft rigs. This requires Hamlib 4.7.1.
  • Various minor fixes and improvements:
    • The program no longer jumps to tab1 when switching to Hound mode, or when Hound mode is active and band hopping changes to another frequency.
    • DX Call and Grid are cleared when switching to WSPR or FST4W mode. This prevents illogical UDP broadcasts.
    • Fixed a long-standing flaw which prevented saving of Si570 parameter Mult570 in MAP65.
    • A slightly better solution to ensure that UK stations stay within band limits on 60m.
    • Fixed "Test API key" button not working for Cloudlog/Wavelog.
    • Stability updates.
  • Update to Hamlib 4.7.1.
For those who are updating from WSJT-X 3.0.0 GA, please also note the following new features in WSJT-X Improved 3.1.0:
  •  Introduction of a new open-source FT2 mode:
    • FT2 is an ultra-fast 77-bit mode with TR periods of 3.75 seconds (= 1/2 of FT4).
    • The history of FT2 goes back to experiments by Joe, Steve, and Bill (sk) in 2019 which later became FT4. IU8LMC recently introduced an FT2 mode with modified parameters. The FT2 mode introduced here is compatible with it, but is fully open-source. No code from IU8LMC was used.
    • FT2 has now been officially included in the ADIF specification 3.1.7 (as an MFSK submode, like FT4).
  • Support of QSOs between two stations with non-standard or compound callsigns for the 77-bit modes (FT8, FT4, FT2, MSK144, Q65, FST4). The following QSOs are now possible:
    • two non-standard callsigns (e.g. DG123YCB with W250USA)
    • two compound callsigns (e.g. DG2YCB/QRP with W1XYZ/YOTA, or HB9/DG2YCB with KP5/W1XY)
    • non-standard callsign and compound callsign (e.g. DG123YCB with W1XYZ/QRP)
    • non-standard callsign and /P callsign (e.g. DG123YCB with W1XYZ/P)
    • two standard callsigns with /P, /M, /R or whatever (e.g. DG2YCB/MM with W1XYZ/P)
    • Note that both stations must use WSJT-X Improved v3.1.0 (or compatible software) for such QSOs. WSJT-X or any earlier version of WSJT-X Improved would get stuck in an endless Auto Seq loop.
    • These new QSO types cannot be used in special operating activities, as the available 77 bits are not sufficient for this purpose.
  • New technology for the MAP65 program:
    • The map65.exe file is now less than 1/4 the size it was before. It comes along with modernized FORTRAN code.
I've also recorded two YouTube videos (in English and German) that provide more information about the new features.

As usual, all packages are available on my SourceForge page. Here are the direct links to download the frequently used packages:

Windows 64-bit:
Linux:
macOS:
Windows 32-bit packages can be downloaded here.

You'll find various packages for the Raspberry Pi (Trixie, Bookworm and Bullseye) here.

Tarballs with the source code can be found here.

Final Notes:
For those of you launching a 3.1.0 build for the first time, go to Settings | Frequencies, right-click on the frequencies table and click on Reset. This will bring you the new (tentative) FT2 QRGs.
I recommend that you always make backup copies of your WSJT-X.ini and wsjtx_log.adi files before installing program releases that involve major changes!
If someone receives a virus warning when downloading from my SourceForge page, it is almost certainly a false positive. In such a case, please contact the provider of your antivirus software. That's the best way to get rid of those annoying false positive virus alerts.

Enjoy the new release! Thanks to everyone who contributed! It was a lot of work!

73 de DG2YCB,
Uwe
