In reference to the statistical information as it relates to the data that has been recorded. I believe that we can use the current data as it has be accumulated and recorded. However, if we are looking for trends, then we must identify what information that we a seeking, what set are variables are relevant to our particular study.
Afterward we need to confirm our data by getting a random sampling of those parts of data that we think are important. Do our our analysis and then compare it to what has been previously recorded in other studies, then go from there.
An example of what i am talking about is: (Number of total child birth is Cumberland County.
We do a random sampling of (Say 500 sample Fields)
1. Recorded births in Cape Fear Hospital (two tear time frame)
2. Recorded Births at the County Clerks Office(Two year time Frame)
3. birth per randomly selected days/months
4. birth detected by law enforcement, social service, WIC programs,
or agencies
or what ever data that we find relevant.
Data is then correlated to reduced redundancy, and then based upon the data you need, its is formulated, analized, extrapolated, and recorde to render the disired results,
Bob

It has been suggested that this issue might be a good test case for WTP to start building a rep as a neutral, data-driven "think tank." I strongly concur. I see this issue as one that every single taxpayer in the county will care about. I'd like to pursue gathering data and then analyzing it under the WTP umbrella.

Gentlefolk--
I agree. Critical tasks should support execution of a well defined objective. Honestly, I am at a loss as to what objective we are attempting to execute. It would be helpful to me if our objective was re-stated, a set of supporting critical tasks were outlined and research focused on accomplishing/supporting those tasks and the objective.
It certainly and very well could be me, but I sense a loss of focus and possibly a need to re-apply the KISS principle.----- Original Message -----From: Jwri...@aol.comSent: Wednesday, November 28, 2007 8:18 PMSubject: [WTP-Forum: 69] Re: Feedback requestedThe number of researchers is one issue, but an equally important issue is this: the number/types of topics for research. Alrighty, then. It obviously was me. Please remove my name from the committee so as to make way for some one more likely to offer party line" feed back and contribute in a more constructive manner

I have some experience with statistical analysis and calculus. I am a little rusty right now, but here is what I think would be meaningful.
1. First identify the argument and/or results that you are seeking. If my understanding is correct we are seeking better government (whatever that may means)
2. The data that has already been collected from the various groups with their results are just that (results at that point in time). It may (or may not)have relevance to what we are doing or to our declared objective (arguments).
3. Keep in mind, in general statistical analysis in primarily used to proved or disprove (Support or eject)some known or unknown set of facts, positions, or occurances.)
4. Finally, I say keep it simple until you know the technical proficiency of each of our participants. As our national statitcs indicate, Many Americans are not techically proficient in the Maths and Sciences, so throwing a lot of numbers without explanation may be confusing to one that is not acustom to this can of data. (i.e. does everyone know what a standard deviation or a linear function is) Get my point
We have enough people to do or own random sampling and can arrive at our own conclusion based upon what we are trying to prove or disprove. (10 knowledgable people should be adequate. You don't really need to pay for some high end research at this point in time.
One other comment, for those of you whom are confused about what is "Critical Analysis" let me see if I can simplify it. Critical Analysis is the process or act of dividing concepts or ideas into sub-parts and analysing the claims of another to determine: what concepts or ideas are based on true, false, or uncertain supporting evidence. It further tends to collect evidence (data) to support or reject the arugument for or against the concepts or ideas in question.
I hope this gives some clarity to some of us. Feel free to make comments, just thought I throw my ten cent in the pot.
