For those of you who could not attend, we had what was considered by the attendees to be one of our better meetings/discussions yesterday in Murray.   Dan Cone has shared his notes of the meeting with those of us on the google group, and I’m expanding it to those who we, in our technical ignorance, who have not been added.

Also attaching our normal group photo.

Friends,

I mentioned two websites that are doing remarkable work in transcribing and making available civil-war era letters for public use. Since several people asked me about them, I thought a general broadcast would be in order.

The first is called "spared and shared." The owner has hundreds (if not thousands) of soldier letters people have sent him to transcribe. These range from items going for auction to collections in private hands - these are not, by and large, in repositories or archives. He offers his services free, with the caveat that he can then post those transcriptions on his website.

Here is a link to his main website: https://wjgriffing.wixsite.com/sparedandshared5

Here is his facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Griff.CWLetters

if you click on the "websites" on the header, you will get a drop-down menu of the websites where he has preserved his letters. But frankly, there are even more sites than those listed, I think he is up to "spared and shared 22" now.

The second website is by Dan Masters, and focuses on Ohio units, but not exclusively. Dan is doing a great job ferreting out soldier letters from newspapers, and posting them with added context. Here is a link to the index of his site:

Both of these sites are remarkable for the number of primary sources being made available, as well as the fine historical work being done with context and annotation.

Leave it to me to forget the link to the most important website, the spared and shared compilation called "Billy Yank and Johnny Reb Letters."

These are listed by state and regiment.

Dear members of the WTHA:

Apparently my email correspondence with Sam Elliott ended before the Chinese hacked my account and deleted everything. I am seeking a personal email address for Sam. I don't know who gets this, but I would appreciate your passing on my request. He can reach me at lawrenc...@gmail.com

Thanks.

Safe travels,

Larry
