Sorry for the delay.

Name:  Danine Panza

City born:  Rahway, New Jersey

City raised: Rahway, New Jersey

Family info:  Married, no children, 3 dogs and 1 cat

Favorite food:  It would have to be pizza (east coast thin crust pizza) since chocolate is not considered a food

Favorite animal: It’s a tie between dogs and cats with horses a close second

Favorite travel spot:    We like places we can relax or sight see – Savage River, MD; Black Mountain, NC are examples.  We love going for drives and taking the back roads

Hobbies:  Reading, going for drives with my husband, doing crafts, visiting the museums, volunteering

Why do you volunteer for SNAP?   I believe strongly in SNAP’s mission and volunteering also allows me to make an impact in my community.  My volunteering allows them to use their funds on the animals instead of on labor costs.  Life can be so hectic between work and home that taking the time to do something for someone other than myself helps me appreciate what I have and helps provide a balance to my life.    An added bonus is that I know I am going to enjoy my time with them.

How did you start volunteering for SNAP?  A friend asked me to volunteer with her at a Bayou Fest and I had so much fun that I continue to do it every year.

Why is the work SNAP does so important?   We have so many unwanted animals in this city because people either cannot afford to spay/neuter their animals or they simply don’t understand the implications of their non-action.  SNAP provides a variety of valuable services; they educate the public on the importance of spay/neuter programs; they provide low cost options in their clinics and mobile units and they provide a basic wellness service where the public can get yearly shots and medications again at a lower cost.

Crazy pet stories:  My husband and I are addicted to cairn terriers (think Toto in the Wizard of Oz).  Our first one, Houston (that’s another story), was personality galore and extremely cunning.   We had just moved to Houston (Houston was about 4 months old) and the rooms were full of moving boxes.  We had left some food on the breakfast bar which of course he noticed.  He roamed the room surveying the boxes and furniture.  Then made his move.  We watched in disbelief as he jumped from box to box to table to chair and made it to the food.  The child rule works for dogs too – you can’t punish them if you’re laughing at what they did.  That was only the beginning of the Houston saga.  We lost him a year ago and still miss him.

Other interesting stories/facts:  This past year has been tough.  We lost two cairns and gained a Chihuahua mix (Mojo) and pit bull/lab mix (Suede).  My husband brought Mojo home – he was left tied to a grill in our complex – no one responded to the flyers so he found a forever home in us.  Suede was abandoned in our complex as well.  It took my husband an hour to get her out of the bushes and now she does not leave his side when he’s home.  This has led to new House Rules.  1. You have to return with the same number of dogs you left with. 2.  They have to be the same dogs.
