10. Why is the work SNAP does so important? There is direct correlation of the number of spay-neuter surgeries to the number of animals being admitted in shelters; SNAP works to prevent animal overpopulation. There is also an equal importance on the work SNAP does in educating the public on proper veterinary care for animal companions.

How did you start working for SNAP? I love nonprofits and wanted to work where I could make a difference
Why is the work SNAP does so important? It’s very important because so many poor animals are homeless, end up in shelters and in the long run die because people don’t want them.
Crazy pet stories - Other interesting stories/facts – During my trip to the San Antonio clinic on October 19, 2013, I was in the surgery animal when his tiny 3 ½ pound sad puppy caught my eyes. So I went over to him to say hello and pet him. When I did that – one of the technicians told me that he didn’t have an owner. The technician had found him the day before abandoned on the side of Loop 410 (freeway) , so she brought him to the clinic to get him checked out. I heard that story and it made me so sad that someone would just dump such a sweet dog on the road. The puppy could have been run over by a car/truck if she had not rescued him. So I said I would take him and add him to my family where he would have two loving parent and two furry brothers to play with. He has been a wonderful addition to our family and are happy he is ours.
VETERINARIAN
5. Name: Mary Kate Lawler
City born: Colorado Springs, CO
City raised: Dansville NY
College attended: Marist College Poughkeepsie, NY and Cornell University Ithaca NY
Family info: 4th oldest in a family of 14 children. And TV shows about large happy families that all get along and like each other are a myth – not the reality that TV would have you believe
Favorite food: that is far too broad a question to ever answer. How can anyone name one food as a favorite, maybe in a food group like favorite fruit or favorite meat or favorite raw vegetable – but anyone answering the question favorite food is clearly either lying or just putting down something for the sake of answering and being done with the exercise.
Favorite animal: I like dogs – but I am still not fond of the favorite word because I don’t like binding myself to just one thing – all animals are awesome!
Favorite travel spot:Favorite favorite favorite again! What an unfair word!!!
In Europe – Ireland hands down; in Texas – Gulf coast especially Port Aransas, in South America the Galapagos – traveling just about anywhere can be an inspiring exciting adventure and there are countless beautiful places on this earth waiting to be visited.
Hobbies: I enjoy a multitude of things, I like anything outdoors, I like to sew and be creative, I enjoy learning new things – being a multitasking person it is difficult to stick to one thing, so I don’t really have any consistent hobbies, just whatever is new and interesting I try.
Number of spay/neuter procedures done (estimate): I think I have probably done 70,000 -80,000 over my career in veterinary medicine.
How did you start working for SNAP? I had recently moved to Texas and I was taking a break from working in veterinary medicine. I saw an opportunity in a veterinary journal to go on a spay/neuter trip in the Galapagos Islands and I called and signed up. As an afterthought, I thought perhaps I should volunteer at a spay/neuter clinic and make sure that I am still able to spay/neuter, since I had not been working for 6 months. I contacted Dr. Weedon through an internet search for spay/neuter clinics. Dr. Weedon invited me to attend a Neutersol Event that San Antonio SNAP was holding at the Humane Society of Bexar County in San Antonio. The event was overloaded with clients and Dr. Weedon asked me to stay and help. At one point Shawn Hawkins came through, Dr. Weedon introduced me and Shawn said “you are hired”. That is how I started working for SNAP.
Why is the work SNAP does so important? Because dogs and cats continue to die around the world for no other reason than there are too many
