Hi Caroline,
Thanks for your reply and for providing the serial number for the church's recalled Philips FRx AED. Here is an overview of the recall. If the device is triple chirping (beeping 3 times consecutively), then it needs to be pulled from service and will fail. If it is not triple chirping, then you can leave it in service, although there is a resistor (which is the reason for the recall) in the device that can fail when high voltage is applied. It is a low probability failure (less than 1% chance), but still a chance. This is a class 2 recall with the FDA, so it is 100% voluntary. The device was manufactured in 2008, so the 5-year warranty has expired. Philips is offering rebates off our discounted pricing toward the purchase of a new replacement that is out of the recall and comes with an 8-year warranty, new pads, and a battery. See the attached recall notice from Philips (page 3, number 4 shows you how to identify the serial number, and that it is a part of the recall), quotes to replace with the same Philips FRx device & an alternative Philips device (brochures attached), and Service Life information from the Philips owner's guide. Here is a breakdown of both units:
Philips FRx (Current AED) For children under 8 years old or weighing less than 55 pounds, the device uses a single set of pads and has a pediatric key to switch modes.
Pads replaced every 2 years - $69
Battery replaced every 4 years - $205
Philips OnSite (Alternate AED) This device takes separate pads for adults & children under 8 years old or weighing less than 55 pounds.
Adult pads replaced every 2 years - $89
Pediatric pads replaced every 2 years - $125 (not included)
Battery replaced every 4 years - $205
Your device is 18 years old and does a rigorous self-test daily, so if the church is able to do the replacement, now is a good time to upgrade it. Please keep in mind that replacing AEDs every 10 years is recommended. Let me know if you have any questions.
Take care,
