We talked about this idea last semester and now it is happening: you
have the opportunity to work with the next group of engr101 students
in the fall!
Here's how it works: starting next fall WSU is grouping all the
intro courses into the same family and renaming them all to WSU*101.
The * denotes the field the intro is in so in our case of
engineering we have been renamed from ENGR101 to WSUE101. Get it?
E? Engineering? Ok. Now that we have that...
All WSU*101 classes are hiring peer leaders --- students who wish to
help out, make a connection with the WSU*101 students etc. So you
could be a peer leader for WSUE101 if you wanted to continue to work
with me or you could be a peer leader for a WSU*101 in some other
discipline if you wish instead.
Our WSUE101 will share some course work and classes with the larger
WSU*101 family: ten or so WSU*101 classes will all meet at the same
time in a large lecture hall 1x/week. That's called a
"supersection." The rest of the time each of the sections meet on
their own as we have always done. That's when our WSUE101 will do
our engineering-specific projects and our introductions to the
various fields of engineering. There's also some sort of online
component in place of a class meeting for some of the WSU*101
courses. I'm not expecting that WSUE101 will participate fully in
that part of the larger course design.
Now that you get what's going on, here's the official description
and call for Peer Leaders from the powers that be:
Peer Leaders will co-facilitate a one-hour 25-student
section meeting, attend a one-hour “supersection” meeting (ten
sections meet together for one hour) and participate in the online
portion of the course. Peer Leaders will also meet individually
and in small groups with the 25 students in their section once per
month. Peer Leaders will receive extensive training (at a
mandatory workshop in August) about how to assist freshmen in
making the transition to college, and will also be eligible to
take a 3-hour course on leadership that is not available to any
other students on campus. The pay is $10 per hour, and the
workload is about 10 hours per week for 16 weeks. If you are
interested, send a cover letter, résumé and a one-page statement
about why you would make a good peer leader to of...@wichita.edu.
Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled, but
the priority date for consideration is April 25, 2011.
You should state in your cover letter if you wish to be considered
for WSUE101, the more general WSU*101 courses, or both. If both,
state what you would prefer.
I'm glad to review any of your application materials if you wish. If
you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
