Automatic mastering does sound like an oxymoron (because the whole point of mastering is to send your mix to an experienced engineer, who will manually analyze and repair your mix in a treated room), however my first impressions of the AAMS Auto Audio Mastering System are extremely positive. It comes with a library of mastered audio files (available in various styles from rock to modern house), which are used as a reference for your mix. Even better, you can load any mastered track of your choice and use it as a reference for your mix. The program will then automatically master your mix, by applying the calculated EQ, compression and limiter settings.
The program can also be used as a mastering suite, since it comes with built-in mastering effects and some pretty good metering tools. It also gives you EQ and compression suggestions, which you can export in Microsoft Word format and use those suggestions as a starting point while working on your mix with your favorite VSTs inside your DAW.

To install AAMS you must be the system Adminstrator in Windows 7 or 8 (Vista) to have all files correctly installed. Also Windows 7 or 8 Home Version users might expirience problems not having XP mode installed on their computer.
Some background:
The track I chose is created mostly using samples loaded to my AR, the AK and AR also add some magic by acting as external fx processors and filter banks. I like the bit crusher effect on the AR and use it a lot (maybe too much sometimes). I also use some randomness to filter type changes and for altering the start point to the samples. This adds playfulness to the composition but also some not very subtle pops that sounds a bit weird at points. Any thoughts on how to still be able to have randomness to these parameters but without the most extreme pop sound is appreciated.
My usual process:
I create sounds, compose and arrange my things using pattern chains and song mode on my elektrons
-> I also do most of my mixing in the elektron boxes outside of the computer
-> Then record each track with fx and all to my DAW
-> Add some stereo width to one or two of the tracks
-> make sure bass frequencies are centred
-> and also automate fade in and fade out and mute tracks (which in live situations could be done manually)
-> if required I also fix some of the artefacts my composition process has rendered (I should have removed some of the louder pops)
-> When pleased I render a stereo track
-> The rendered track is opened in a new master daw session
-> Immediately render a new stereo track with normalisation applied
-> Import the rendered track to the master daw session and apply fade ins and outs (and sometimes also some extra reverb for adding a bit more life to a fade)
-> Render another stereo track
-> Make publicly available
The result:
To me using the intensity lever even just slightly just resulted in an inferior result than my usual process (just applying some normalisation). Hiss and noise from the filters and bit crusher was amplified to unpleasant levels. But having the intensity at 0% still did some interesting and useful stuff for my track, the levels seemed to just ever so slightly pinched so the overall loudness could be increesed just a little bit. This was imo an improvement compared to my regular process.
Are you able to sort of reverse-engineer what the machine is doing? Is it basically EQ and compression algos or multiband stuff being applied?
I might see that it would be helpful to get another perspective on your mix, and then improving at the mix level, or someone needed a urgent share something quick to make a rough mix more listenable.
I remember the boxes and thought they were cool (still think they are), when I finally (no pun intended) had a budget roomy enough to justify a dedicated tool for mastering, they felt a bit outdated as explained in the video.
It features 100 Band Equalizer, 8 Multiband Compression, Balancing, and Loudness settings for internal DSP Processing, with all audio corrections automatically done purely inside the AAMS Program. Also, AAMS installs a Reference Database of 200 Musical styles.
AAMS does all audio mastering fully automatic. Creating a good equal spectrum range on all speaker systems, human hearing, and commercially acceptable sound levels. One of the most important things about mastering audio is how you create a sound, especially how you want it to be heard.
The demo is fully functional except for the fact that every now and then it will silence out, you cannot save parameter values with your session and the plugin will not respond to automation coming from the host.
This plugin is easy to use and it sounds very transparent, especially if it listens to the whole track. The result sounds the same just louder. I tried Ozone but I can often hear artifacts and the whole track may change character, and there are too many parameters to tweak. This one just sets the loudness right and can also help a little with the EQ.
Why didn't I know this plugin earlier??? It saves tons my time! Just use it to do the basic mixing correction in just one minute and then use hardwares to adjust the tone a little bit, Then the whole master is done!!! Wow!
This appears to be a fantastic plugin, the automatic leveling and eq I think sound better than my own efforts. However, it has crashed on me twice on the first day of use, Windows 10 / Tracktion Waveform. My whole computer locks up and makes a horrible noise that sounds like a 60 cycle square wave coming through the speakers. Had to hard reset twice. Hoping for a fix since this seems to be a great tool for my mastering process.
First tried V1.1 with Reason12.5 it chrashs after second learn process. When i load up a project direct with MasterTool vst and i still turn the target level not to fast and still stopping the learn process after 30 0000 samples it works stable. Seen overal, it has the ability to bring down the dynamics of your track, with more minus target level it brinmgs down the dynamics/loudness factor, and gives more presence for the mids and highs. Target level between -6 till -9 not working really, but at all its a nice plug for dynamic shaping. Glad Im not given up to get it work propper, I compared it with ozone9 elements, for tame down dynamics, where the izotope plug failed completely, hornets master tool was able to controll grity/scratchy signals fine. Thanks Saverio, maybee a little buggy plug, but brilliant! During my demotrial, update 1.1.1 comes, now target level works from -6 up completly and the learn loop bug is fixed ? nice, now its a must have for mastering electronic music.
I like Hornet plugins in general. However, some of them glitch my system (Catalina OS, Macbook Pro 2012, Ableton 11) causing it to freeze like this one, Mastertool. Definitely demo before you buy. Hornet needs to do more cross-platform testing and debugging.
Tried the demo and no matter which DAW I use, the plugin crashes the session. Everything else on my computer works flawlessly. Windows 10, Intel Core i5 8250U, 24GB Ram, 1TB SSD. Hope this will be resolved as I'm very curious about this plugin.
Excellent Plugin, However, A wet/dry mix knob would be well appreciated. Also, the plugin glitches when adjusting the paramenters in real-time. Also, suggest that a video should accompany every new plugin release as I am certain that this will help sales. Also, A LITTLE PRICY FOR HORNET AS THERE ARE SIMILAR PLUGINS THAT CAN ACCOMPLISH THE SAME RESULTS.
Because once you find your sound, you can copy that sound to another track and so on. The basic idea is to copy the sound but not harm the original recording. That is easy. Therefore have complete control by using your own references, adding, combining, adjusting and saving all for later repeated use! What an engineer would do in case of manual mastering, aams will do the same. Always based on the same calculations, this will give the user a steady base for audio mastering to all speaker systems.
