I just returned from New Delhi, India, where I took in a dizzying
array of sights and sounds. Among the highlights were the performances
at the International Festival of Sacred Arts.
Only a few such sacred music festivals exist in the world. The Delhi
one is new this year; other sacred music festivals take place in
Quebec and Los Angeles; the biggest one of all in Fez, Morocco.
And then there's our own World Sacred Music Festival right here in
Olympia. Which happens tomorrow -- Saturday March 7.
It says something about our little city that we have nurtured and
maintained such a festival for five years now. We're not as big as
those other cities, but the deep spirit of the Northwest shines
brightly in the diverse performers who share music and dance from
their spiritual traditions. And it shines in the large number of
volunteers needed to run such a large event
The festival website --
http://olysacredmusic.org -- includes the
complete schedule for all three stages and bios of all the performers.
All told, there are 20 performances and workshops, plus a gallery of
diverse sacred art and a global marketplace of crafts, art, and
information.
The music opens at 11:00 a.m. with Olympia's own Erev Ravs playing
klezmer, and closes with performances by the Washington DC-based duo
Word Beat and the thunderous drums of Portland Taiko.
Oh, and if you tune in to KAOS-fm this morning, you'll hear a
preview of one of the festival performers -- Jewbilee -- live
on Spin The Globe between 10am and noon.

Advance tickets will be available until later today; after that you'll
need to get your tickets at the door. I hope to see you there!
