Dear WSMF artists and friends:

Many of you have contacted us about the 2010 World Sacred Music Festival, and I apologize for the delay in responding. We have been creating a new structure for the festival this year, focusing on a series of events instead of a single annual festival day.

We're expecting to hold these WSMF events quarterly, and each will feature two (possibly three) artists or groups. The day will consist of one or more afternoon workshops, and an evening concert with sets by each artists/group, then a collaboration between the two artists/groups.

Because of the new festival structure, we will not be posting a performer application for each event as in previous years. But if you are an artist who would like to be considered one of our events, by all means get in touch. We'll keep a file of artists from which to draw for future WSMF events. As in the past, our modest budget dictates that most WSMF artists will be those located in (or touring through) Washington and Oregon.

Though we will miss many elements of the all-day festival, this new structure has a number of benefits, including the flexibility to work with touring artists throughout the year, enjoying the festival in different sacred spaces, and focusing each event on a particular musical style, geographic region, or other theme.

The working theme for our first 2010 event is "Singing Your Prayers." It will take place Sunday March 14, 2010, at Temple Beth Hatfiloh here in Olympia. The temple is interested in bringing a cantor as one of the performers, so we're looking into that.

I'm currently reaching out to artists that I think will be a particularly good fit for this first event and for collaboration with a cantor. If you know of someone who fits this description, let me know.

On this last day of 2009, I'm feeling grateful to be part of such a vibrant interfaith music festival and for my acquaintance with many of you and friendship with some of you. Along with the consistent backing of Interfaith Works (http://interfaith-works.org), your support and participation are what make our volunteer-run festival possible.

May you have a happy, productive, and spirited 2010.
