I'm sorry to have to report that John Massengale, for many years a NASSS member, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2013. John dedicated a great deal of his professional life  to teaching and engaging in research in sociology of sport. He was one of the first members of NASSS, and made one of the  presentations at the first NASSS conference in 1980 in Denver. In addition to NASSS, John was active in what is now the National Association for Kinesiology in Higher Education, the North American Society for Sports Management, and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance

He was Professor Emeritus in the Kinesiology Department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

I will forever be grateful for having John Massengale as a personal/professional friend.

Thank you Brian for the information about John.  I communicated with Paula Kun of AAHPERD and she asked if I would write a piece about John for distribution.  I would appreciate any comments or other info that I might include. Thanks.

To Friends of John,  I just received the e-mail regarding John's passing.  I was deeply saddened by the news.  John was a great professional and a dear friend to many of us.  His tall erect stature and warm and gracious personality always made a striking effect when in his presence.  We will all miss John.  I, like others, would like to send condolences to John's close family.  Thanks for the news and may all of our dear colleagues have a wonderful holiday season.

I was so sorry to hear of this. He was a great mentor in my time as president of WSKW, and he will be sorely missed.
