Hi again eveyrone. Here are top questions I received this week and
the answers that go with them. Please feel free to let me know if
there's something that's still unclear or if you have a different
question that hasn't been answered yet.
Q: I would really like to apply for a job as a toll collector at the
Narrows Bridge but I never see any job openigs. How do I find a job
opening?
A: The toll collectors are actually contracted through a company
called Transcore that handles most of the tolling positions within the
United States. Their employment page can be found by going to
http://www.transcore.com/careers/. On this site, the jobs open at the
Tacoma Narrows bridge can be found under Gig Harbor, Washington.
Q: I just got my certification as a flagger. How do I get a job with
WSDOT as a flagger?
A: WSDOT does not hire flaggers as we prefer to permanent employees
and flaggers are usually paid on a seasonal or hourly basis.
Therefore, the majority of our Maintenance Technician jobs require a
flagger certification but also require a CDL and other
certifications. If you're interested in working as a Maintenance
Technician, please visit our website
www.wsdot.wa.gov/Employment to
see all available job announcements and to join our list serve so you
can be emailed each time a new job opens up. If you're interested in
flagging, then please visit
http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/biz/safety/flaggerinfo/contractors.htm
for a list of flagging companies and their contact information.
Q: What does "Open Until Filled" mean?
A: Open until filled that the job will stay online until we have
offered the position to someone. Although there is no definitive end,
it means that if you're interested, you should submit your application
as soon as possible as we are interviewing as applications come in and
we do not want to wait until a definitive closing deadline. If you
want to check on the status of an "Open Until Filled" recruitment,
please feel free to contact a recruiter at the phone number listed on
the job announcement to see if they have already begun interviews.
Q: I just want a job but I am not sure what would be a good fit for
me. Where do I submit my resume?
A: Currently, we do not have a resume bank of an Applicant Tracking
System where you can submit your resume and be called when a position
opens up. If you want to apply for a job, you must apply for a
specific job that is listed on our employment page. WSDOT recruiters
do offer informational interivews either via telephone or in person.
If you are unaware of what career path is available to you, please
give me a call at
360.705.6932 and we can set up a time where we can
go over your resume and see what you can work on and what types of
jobs you may enjoy.
Q: The TE1 job announcement says it's location is statewide. Does
this mean that a TE1 has to travel around the state or that there are
various openings statewide?
A: It means that we have various openings around the state. We are
trying to take a proactive approach to our TE 1hiring. We keep an
online bank of all TE1 applications, as positions open up, hiring
managers are able to search through the bank to locate applicants who
are willing to work in the specific area that the manager is in.
Applications stay active in our system for up to one year, so an
applicant has multiple opportunities to be contacted as new positions
open up.
Q: I want to apply for a job but one of the requirements is a CDL.
Where do I go to get one?
A: A Commercial Driver's License can be obtained at the Department of
Licensing. Be advised that you must take a written and driving exam
to obtain this license and you will need to provide a large enough
vehicle to take the exam. To find out all the requirements, please
visit the Department of Licensing page at
http://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/cdl.html
