The Learning Teacher Network, in cooperation with the Regional Environment Center (REC) Turkey, welcomes you to an International Seminar on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Istanbul, Turkey on September 26-27, 2014. The title of the seminar is 'ESD at the Crossroads'. By interactive discussions among the participants the seminar will discuss key issues that bridge the Decade for Education for Sustainable Development to UNESCO’s forthcoming Global Action Programme.

This international seminar primarily targets colleagues in education, training and youth who have previous experience of - and work with - elements of ESD (Education for sustainable development) in policy or their teaching and training practice.

Framework
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) allows every human being to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to shape a sustainable future. ESD means including key sustainable development issues into teaching and learning.

The overall goal of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) 2005-2014 has been to integrate the principles, values and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of education and learning.

The World Conference on ESD in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan in November 2014 will outline the continuation of the Decade by a new Global Action Programme on ESD from 2015. Sustainability begins with education.

The Istanbul Seminar
The Istanbul Seminar aims to concretely discuss and conclude on four questions in order to highlight the practitioners’ view on ESD and to deliver the seminar’s conclusions prior to the World Conference. Therefore the seminar discussions will have the following focal points to be answered as outcome of the seminar:

  • How can ESD update and improve educational purpose and outcomes?
  • How can ESD help to improve and enrich school curriculum development?
  • How can ESD promote innovation in the teaching-learning conceptual framework?
  • How can ESD guide students to have the knowledge, skills and values to care for, and solve the sustainable development issues that will arise in their lifetime?
