Last May Åland University organised a friendly single class robotic sailing boat competition with 6 teams from European universities. The competition was designed to get undergraduate students interested in the subject and, as a result of this, Coventry University got involved in the WRSC for the first time!

The rules and restrictions are designed with this I’m mind:

Single class using the stock RC Laser hull, sails and keel.
Maximum spend of €800
Powered using a Raspberry Pi (i’m Negotiating a sponsorship deal with the RPI foundation to supply this kit to all teams.
Each team to comprise a team leader (undergrad or postgrad) plus up to 4 undergraduate students.
Up to three teams per university).
Competition to take place in Mariehamn next May.

The Aberystwyth team would definitely be interested and i'd love to go
back to Mariehamn after visiting for the 2015 WRSC.

How strictly do you intend to adhere to the class rules, talking with
the team today we were thinking of milling an RC laser hull out of foam
to reduce costs. Would this be permitted? If not any other thoughts on
how to keep the cost down, according to the official page
(http://www.rclasers.com/for-sale) a new boat costs between £455 and
£725 which would be most if not all the €800 budget.

May is really bad timing for us as its when exams are and we won't know
the exact timetable until April next year. Is there any possibility to
poll interested teams over the best dates? Something in April during the
Easter break would work better for us. Early June is Sailbot (it was
June 3rd-7th this year).
