In "Output Format" I miss the "Keep Original Format" option... Is it hidden somewhere?
Assuming that I have a folder containing multiple png, jpg, bmp files and I want to batch resize them all to a specific size (or batch rename them all to a specific name) without the "Keep Original Format" option during the resize/rename process the format of some of the files will unavoidably change, whereas if that (useful) option would be available I could just batch resize/rename all my images without having to affect the file formats.
I have concluded that writing to FastStone is totally pointless as they just ignore users suggestions and bug notifications... A detailed mail that I sent (sup...@FastStone.org) at the beginning of April informing about the "Keep Original Format" (missing) option must have been ignored too since I never received a reply nor I see that issue being fixed in newer releases.
Anybody can suggest another good batch photo resizer?
This program has been my program of choice for renaming. I've tried other renaming programs, but they seem to have way too many options with a high learning curve. This program is straight forward and easy to use for renaming. I don't use the resize feature, so when I click the "FastStone Resizer" I sometimes forget that it does that as well.
I recommend you get this if you are a photographer or do multiple file renaming.
All of the faststone apps do their job and do them very well.
I'd not use anything different.
And Irfanview is way over-rated, just 'cause everyone says it's good doesn't mean it's true.
This is faster, simpler and better looking.
I've used IrfanView for a long time, and it's true that the resizer has no advantage over IrfanView, but the FastStone Image Viewer (also free, also available as portable) has some nice features. It shows thumbnails by default, has a good slideshow viewer (like Irfan), does some nice batch renaming and image editing, and it also has an easy to use contact sheet creation ability, watermark addition, and screen capture in many options - full screen, foreground window, window, rectangle or freehand area which works well.
As the dimensions suggest, all of these extreme cases (that is, all of the ones I viewed manually) featured a photo that was taller than it was wide. I was not sure what to make of that. What did seem clear was that, for purposes of producing 1280-pixel-wide resizings of the original images, FastStone wasted disk space when the original width was higher than 1280, and IrfanView likewise when original width was 1280 or lower.
I was not sure how robust those findings were. It was possible that changing a setting or trying for a different image width, in either of the programs, would have produced a different outcome. There could likewise be different outcomes if I had been working with a different set of photos, of different quality or featuring different subject matter. But at present, at least for these photos, if I wanted to eliminate waste from the sizes of the images, it did seem I should use FastStone to resize the lower-resolution images and IrfanView to resize the higher-resolution images, pending experimentation with other programs that might yield even better results.
It was tempting to refer to the JPEG quality level as a percentage (e.g., 50%), but apparently that would be incorrect. Atwood offered a chart indicating that, at least for one photo he was examining in detail, a drop from 100 to 90 would reduce file size by about 65%; a drop from 90 to 70 would eliminate another 40% or so; and the gains from further trimming would continue to diminish from there. A participant in one discussion suggested that the size-quality tradeoff was typically unacceptable below 90, and that artifacts would typically become apparent below 75. For a different photo, Fulton noted that even JPEG = 100 is lossy, and that deterioration in quality becomes apparent at 80. There seemed to be a rough consensus that quality below 50 would be visibly inferior for most purposes, but Ekin contended that, for some purposes (e.g., webpages), a setting of 50-60 could be sufficient.

if I were a woman, your photo would cause me sleepless nights, fortunately I am a a hetero born 82 years ago, so it is just VERY nice. It disturbs me that looks do matter, be it women, men, cars, buildings, RC transmitters. I am a manufacturer of military target drones since 1968 and I hate that the design has gone in a Trumpish direction forgetting that function should dictate form, not fashion. We got rid of the silly chrome appointments inside cars to avoid disturbing reflections, my 1990 Mercedes 350 has none just like my 2000 Range Rover. Now chrome is back worse than ever.
