Should higher education be available for only to good students? Some people think that every student should have the equal opportunity for higher education regardless of their abilities or willingness. However, I agree with the speaker that college education should be designed to advanced academic inquiries because higher education needs to focus on more theoretical aspects of various disciplines rather than hands-on experiences or simple service apprenticeship.

Admittedly, receiving college education has been considered as an individual’s privilege because people without a BA diploma are discriminated in getting a job. For this reason, many Korean parents think their children should be placed in a college or a university. Without taking into account of their children’s interest or their life goal, Korean parents waste money in college education only for a piece of paper, called diploma.

On the contrary, the American higher education system selects students who are only eligible for rigorous academic training. For example, medical schools and law schools only accept few bright students who are good at logical reason and critical thinking which make them distinguished from others. In addition, these disciplines also require students endurance to continue many years of studies which consist of challenging contents and tough experiments. Like this, higher education should be devoted to provide professional workers.
