My second poem for Thursday August 3 2023 PARALYSIS Jill

I just listened to an NPR report on the over 100,000 on the formal list

of people who are missing in Mexico. I listened to statements about the "final report" 

of investigators who uncovered factual evidence that members of government, the

military and the cartels work together and are often physically present

and participate in the murders of many of these people.

However, despite evidence, the state does nothing.

I wrote this poem.

In Mexico,

working together, the government,

the military and the cartels carry out

thousands of murders.

 

Nothing changes

except they continue killing

and lying about it.

 

The truth paralyzes the public.

Nothing happens

except disappearances

and murders continue.

 

Over 100,000 missing,

and nothing is done.

94 murders is the daily average.

 

The dead include defenders of human rights.

The dead include over 30 journalists.

The dead are our fathers and mothers,

our sons and daughters.

 

Whoever protests

may join the ranks of the dead.

Proof is there but it is hidden.

 

When proof is uncovered,

still nothing is done.

Nothing changes.

The killings continue.
