Hi everybody. I'm sorry I've been silent for most of the summer, but I
can blame that on computer problems. Currently I no longer have a
working windows machine, but that will change by this weekend, unless I
screw up the build. Anyways, I have been writing, just not much on the
computer. But I did key in this a couple of days ago, consider it a
preview of what may come.

Life Amongst the Stars: Episode One

She groaned in pain as she slowly returned to consciousness. Her head
felt like it was being used for a drum set while simultaneously being
rubbed raw with coarse sandpaper. She tried to move her hand up to her
throbbing head, but she felt too weak, and was barely able to move her
fingers more than a couple of inches. Thankfully the room was pitch
dark, so she felt safe enough to lay still and think of a plan of
action. She tried to remember what had happened to cause her to be in
this vulnerable position. Hazy memories floated past her mind, each
filled with raw emotion, but none of them offering any coherent reasons
for her current predicament. The last thing that she remembered was
shouting something, but she couldn't remember what she shouted, or even
who she was shouting at. She paused, if she was having trouble
remembering things, did that mean that she had amnesia? What else could
she have forgotten? She took a deep breath, and willed herself to
relax, entering a meditative state where her emotions would not cloud
her memories. Who am I? She thought, but no answer came back. What is
my name? ... What happened to me? ... What should I do? None of her
questions brought forth any answers, just a deep penetrating silence
that threatened to overwhelm her.
She decided to take stock in her surroundings. She felt heavy as she
lay on her back, although by moving her arms slightly she reasoned that
she was not overweight, or abnormally large. She paused for a minute to
consider how she knew that she wasn't supposed to be large.
"Ah, you are finally awake." A deep voice surrounded her, as if it
were coming from all directions at once. "I was beginning to get
worried. By the way, since you were unconscious, I took the liberty of
choosing your name."
She furled her brow, she knew that the voice was something connected
to her, possibly was the voice that she had been yelling at. But it was
strange that it somehow appeared in her head with no real external
source. "So, then Mr. Voice, what is my name?"
There was a pause. "I chose Lynx. Are you okay?"
"I don't know," Lynx responded, a feeling of relief passing
through her as she now had a name to affiliate with herself. Even if it
wasn't her real name, it was better than the blank space that she had
been pulling before. "Who are you? Where are you? How are you talking
to me through my mind?"
There was an even longer pause. "Les`ya, what is wrong? What do your
nanites report?"
Lynx considered her alternate name, not sure if it felt right or
wrong. There was a emotional connection, but she couldn't tell if it
was positive or negative. "I...don't know what a nanite is." She
responded. "Who are you?" She asked again.
A wave of emotions that seemed foreign passed through Lynx that felt
like some kind of sigh that was accompanied by dark lights and low hum.
"My name is Roth. I am your companion during your search.
Unfortunately on the last planet we were on, a merchant attacked us,
and pursued us to this planet where he forced us down. I ejected you
before crashing into the ocean, but you experience severe injuries,
some of them on the head."

Sorry about your computer problems. How is your job going? I like the
premise of the story. Is she some kind of computer? The only thing
that seemed a little off was the beginning where she was thinking. I
couldn't quite put my finger on it, but I felt like if she had amnesia
how could she remember how to meditate? I don't know maybe she would
be able to, it just seemed like she would probably be really anxious
and being able to calm herself like that might be difficult to do
without the conscious knowledge of how to do it. Anyway, I wanted to
read more.

I understand your feelings, mainly because I had those problems when I
was writing it. I have yet to solidify her character. She has changed a
lot over the years, and I am sure she will change again. Hopefully soon
I'll get something down.
