In the slightly over-ambitiously named 'this column will change your
life', Oliver Burkeman talks about persistence and writing, and
challenges 'outcome oriented thinking'. I quite like the goal of the
young Jerry Seinfeld - his scriptwriting technique 'involved marking
an X on a calendar for every day he sat and typed. His goal was an
unbroken chain of Xs. If hed aimed instead to write brilliant jokes,
he'd have been distracted and intimidated'. I often feel like this
when sitting down to write - to just 'be doing it' rather than trying
to make it perfect every time - if I am at least writing /something/
then I have something to work with!
