You need to install the HP driver to use this scanner on Windows. If there isn't an HP driver at www.hp.com for your operating system, then unfortunately VueScan won't work with this scanner. VueScan uses a plugin library that's installed with the HP drivers to talk to this scanner, and doesn't work with this scanner without this plugin library.

the hp scanjet 7800 ($799 direct) is unquestionably the oddest-looking desktop scanner i've ever seen. imagine an equilateral triangle that's been cut in half, then propped up on its shortest side, and you'll have the scanjet's basic cross section. what helps keep it from falling over is a paper tray that sticks out and doubles as its base. quirky design aside, this scanner offers solid capability, good speed, and an exceptional amount of useful software. it's a good fit for a small office or workgroup within a larger office.
at 12.3 by 12.6 by 19.7 inches (hwd), the 7800 is larger than other document scanners in its price range. though it's more imposing than some scanners, it doesn't feel as overwhelming as the measurements suggest. take away the output tray that serves as a base and the footprint would be only 12.6 by 5 inches.
setting up the scanner is a snap. simply connect the 7800's usb cable and power cord and turn the scanner on, then install the driver and other software. i appreciate the robust software package, too. in addition to the easy-to-use hp smart document scan software, the 7800 comes with full versions of readiris pro ocr for optical character recognition, scansoft paperport for document management, and newsoft presto! bizcard reader to scan and store business cards. also helpful is an isis/twain driver that lets the scanner work with essentially any windows program.
finally, there's kofax virtualrescan (aka kofax vrs). it's the premier software for digitally improving scan quality for hard-to-capture documents, like highlighted text or invoices on color paper. vrs can save a lot of time you'd otherwise spend on rescans and manual entry. that's always a help, but particularly important for a scanner like the 7800, which doesn't score all that well on scan speed.
the 7800's engine rating is 25 pages per minute (ppm) in simplex mode (scanning one side of each page), or 50 images per minute (ipm) for duplex mode (scanning both sides of each page). these speeds, however, apply only at resolutions of 200 pixels per inch (ppi) in black-and-white mode, which is the setting manufacturers use most often for document scanner speed ratings.
i'm also not happy about the hp scanjet 7800's business-card scanner function. the card reader slot is in the back of the scanner, where it's hard to get to. also, the process of inserting a card and scanning it took a minimum of 12 seconds per card, which is way too long for practical use. that makes it adequate for things like scanning one hmo id card in a doctor's office but far too much of a chore for scanning a stack of business cards.
Ive been using an HP Scanjet G3110 for years, but i cant seem to get it to work. Ive installed HP solution center, but it won't install my scanner even though I've got it plugged into my computer. I don't have the driver nor the installation CD for my scanner. The HP website doesn't seem to have it either (i was only able to install HP Solution Center by downloading a driver for a different printer). Is there a trustworthy third party site i can download it from, or perhaps there's another solution?
