The current rage (right since "Prema Loka") in Kannada music direction is
Hamsalekha. When he directed music for "Prema Loka" and "Ranadheera,"
fanzines rated him as Ilyaraaja's successor in the South. But then he
became a music machine, churning out as many as 75 films in 2.5 years.
Not so highly rated, but according to me equally talented, is Viayanand,
of "Nee Bareda Kaadambari" (1986) fame. But Hamsalekha's popularity
gobbled his, and he's now down and all-but-out.By the way, "Priyathamaa ho priyathamaa" wasn't "pre-Ilyaraaja" (although
I don't see a parallel in the chronology, since Kannada wasn't all that
affected by Ilayaraaja anyway). It was from a 1987/88 movie, "Kavirathna
Kaalidaasa." G.K.Venkatesh, Ilayaraaja's guru (although the pupil outdid
his mentor by far), was according to me the most original music director
in Kannada (before the Hamsalekha times). He will be remembered forever
for "Nee bandu ninthaaga" (Kasthuri Nivaasa), all the hits from "Huli
Haalina Mevu," "Operation Diamond Racket," "Sose Thanda Sowbhaagya," etc.Shashidhar.
I have no objections to the content of ur article, but why is the stress on
"Pre-Ilayaraja era Kannada songs" ? Ilayaraja did never rule the Kannada film
scene. He had just 3-4 films to his credit as far as kannada films were
concerned. His songs were not that good compared to the tamil ones in kannada.>
Actually Ilayaraja has directed the music in the film "Accident" of Shanker Nag.
But this movie doesn't have any songs in it. That amounts to only the backgroundmusic, which hardly anybody notices, nowadays. He has done a good job there.
There is one more movie of his in kannada "Nyaya gedithu" *ing Tiger, ShankerNag
in which Ilayaraja has sung a song also.

Hamsalekha is the murderer of Kannada film music. Now, everybody does it in his
style. His songs now are very crude and down-to-earth as he pens the lyrics also
Even Satyam was a better MD than this bloke !
Why quote "Operation..." to his credit? Why cudnlt U think of movies like,
"Bhakta kumbara, Bangarada Manushya, Bhutiyana maga Aiyu, and many more...">
>Shashidhar. For me, after GKV, Rajan nagendra, MV Ranga Rao, Upendra kumar come in mind.
I think this was 3 to 4 years back. The undisputed numero Uno in telugu films
now is M.M. kIravANi. Of course Illayaraja was the best music director in telugu
in the eighties. What led to his downfall (in telugu films) was his borrowing
tunes from tamil films into telugu films. After kshaNa kshaNam and
sItArAmayya gAri manamarAlu, it has been kIravAni who has the most successful
songs each year. And I think Ilaiyaraja doesnt do many telugu movies these
days. The ones he did last year (aSwamEtham, amma kODuku, tolimuddu etc)
werent upto the standard of his older songs. IMO the most popular MDs in
telugu as of today are M.M.kIravANi, rAj-kOTi and A.R.Rehman in that order.

>jagadIshI don't know
why Ilaiyaraaja doesn't do many telugu movies. All his regular directors
and producers seem to have left him. What are all the movies Ilaiyaraaja did recently ? I can recount
1. Tholi muddu ( remake of Dil, I think)
Music was very disappointing. A couple of barely hummable songs...2. Aa Okkati Adakku
Music was decent. (a couple of catchy tunes:
"Rajaadhi Raajanu" and " Ko ko ko kona" etc.. Recycled his
tamil "senbagame" tune as "paavuramaa"..)3. Amma Koduku ( Ilaiyaraaja and M.S.Viswnathan joint MDs )
Very "average" music. A couple of good tunes ( "Komma remma",
"Chinna chinna" )4. Aswamedham
Quite good. Except for one OK song ("jhumthanana aanandale"), all the
songs were quite good. A cuple sung by Asha Bhonsle.5. Samaram
I think Samaram and Aswamedham were probably his best in the recent times.
Samaram has a couple of very good songs ( "vennelalo", "Ammadi",
"ekkadidhi"). I loved the beat in "Konare konare kona".6. Repati Rowdy.
Has anyone heard about this movie? I couldn't even get the
audio cassette of this movie, when I was in India a couple of months ago.
Can't comment about the music.7. Kunti Putrudu
Mohan Babu's last flop. Haven't heard the music. So cannot comment. What else has he done in the last one and half year ?
Mediocre orchestration, I think, is the reason why most of the songs from
the above listed movies sound unremarkable. So ironical, since that was
probably Ilaiyaraaja's most distinguising feature.
M.M.kIravANi's given name is marakatamaNi kIravANi. And that doesn't include
his lastname. Thats the name given to him by his father srIharidatta. He is
from viSAkapatnam and did his schooling in raichur(?) in vijayangaram dt. I was
fortunate to meet him when I was trvelling to vijayawADa in 1990. That was
when he was not very famous. He had got his big break composing music for the
rAmOji raO production 'manasU mamata'. He had worked with Laxmikant-Pyarelal
for a while and was supposedly the assistant MD for LPs movie 'Majnu' (starring
nAgArjuna). His cousin srIlEka is also supposedly quite popular in classical
music circles. He considers himself a 'ekalavya sishya' of K.V.mahadEvan. The
people who encouraged him during his initial years include chakravarthy (the MD),
vEToori, ramOjI rao, K Balachandar and S.P.Balasubramanyam. Dont forget to
take a look at his latest songs including ganDIvam.

insipid white wine makes at length excellent vinegar.

I think he is the son of Madhavapeddi Sr. I can only think of
two movies he has MD'ed - Brindaavanam and BhairavaDweepam.
Common link between the two - Singitham. Has he MD'ed
any other movies?
