Hi,

When I choose "email backup" from "Writer's Tools" menu in the OO
Writer, I get this error mssage: "Connection to the database failed.
Make sure that the WriterDB database is registered in OpenOffice.org.
Read Writer's Tools documentation for further info."

Here's what I've done so far:

In OO Base registered WriterDB. It shows as registered under Tools -
Options - OpenOffice.org Base - Databases, with the name Writer DB.
That got rid of an earlier error message about the DB not being
registered in OO. But the email backup still didn't work.

Then I read something about email backup needing to be configured so I
followed that procedure by setting up a Gmail account and downloading
Python 3.0.1 from Python.org. I installed Python and changed the
relevant script, gmail_backup.py. I changed the entries under
GMAIL_USER, GMAIL_PASSWORD and RECIPENT to the following values: my
gmail user name, my gmail password and my gmail user name (for
recipient). I used the default Python30 directory.

I opened and closed OO and clicked Email backup again and got the same
error message. I'm running Windows XP Media Center and OO 3.0.1

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Best regards,

Jaina

Hi Jaina,

In OpenOffice.org, choose Tools -> Macros -> Organize Macros ->
OpenOffice.org Basic. Select then WriterTools -> Backup ->
EmailBackup. Locate the following line:

Shell("C:\Python25\python.exe", 1, "C:\Python25\gmail_backup.py " &
"""" & DocPath & """" & """" & FileName & """")

Change Python25 to Python30.

This should fix the problem.

Kind regards,
Dmitri

Hi, Dmitri:

Well, now there's another problem. When I click Email Backup in OO
Writer's tools, I get a successful "sent" message, so that problem's
fixed. But the backup does not appear in my gmail mailbox. I realize
this might be a gmail issue, but I wanted to make sure I have the OO
setup right. I don't get any sort of error message from gmail. The
mailbox just sits there empty no matter how many times I press
Refresh. I know the gmail mailbox is working b/c I was able to send an
email to it from my other email account.

Here's the situation:

I have the gmail_backup.py installed in the Python30 directory. I
changed the relevant sections in the script as follows:

GMAIL_USER = [my gmail address in format: myn...@gmail.com in double
quotes]
GMAIL_PASSWD = [my gmail password in double quotes]
RECIPIENT = [my gmail address in format: myn...@gmail.com in double
quotes]

There's also a copy of the script in the directory where I downloaded
and unzipped the Writer's Tools. To be safe, I changed that one as
well.

Any thoughts?

Regards,

Jaina

One final thought:

Does this require Linux? I'm running Windows XP Media Center.

Hi Jaina,

It looks like the script doesn't work with Python 3.0. I'm working on
it. Until then, you might want to install Python 2.6.

Dmitri

Hi, Dmitri:

I finally got the email backup to work. Not exactly sure how :-) but
I'm certain that your help and suggestions were instrumental. What a
cool idea! I'm a writer and will probably get a lot of use from this
handy feature. Thanks for the great support.

Best regards,

Jaina
