Hello everyone,

Longtime lurker user of WriteMonkey. Currently using the 3.0.6 Beta. Where does the Beta store files that I save? Couldn't find them using computer search function yesterday. Managed to find my work today (PHEW!!!) by using document sidebar. However, that doesn't tell me where documents are stored on my hard drive. Can anyone tell me where that might be. I'm using Windows 7 x64.

Also it currently allows me to save files as .md files. I presume there's something to do with MarkDown? When will the option to save documents as text files become available? I use WriteMonkey to create and edit text files in a full screen environment. I love the timers and wordcount features in WM2 for example. The closest I get to use Markdown is fountain syntax.

Final thing is how to get the documents I typed into WM3 as text docs in my dropbox folder so I can import them into another application please? Only way I can think of is to open WM2 and to copy files from WM3 into WM2 and save as text file(s) that way. I

hope WM3 keeps all the features of WM2 because I love WriteMonkey as its one of my favourite tools. I hope the Save/Export to text function comes soon as like I said I mainly create text files in writemonkey and not Markdown.

Thanks for your help.

Hello Stacey,

You'll find some answers in the documentation.
Here:
and here:

The section on working with text files lacks a vital bit of information: at least for now WM3 will by default save your single text files in MD MarkDown format.

Technically MarkDown files are plain text files with a custom extension (you should be even able to open and edit MD files on WM2).

I share your mixed feelings, though. I love working with WM3 – best writing experience ever, and I've tried everything – but I miss the plain txt purity of WM2. Databases makes things like searching a lot faster, but the integrity of a folder full of txt files in unmatchable in my opinion.

josip, can we have both worlds?

I like where the Projects feature is going, but I would love an "OPEN FOLDER AS PROJECT" option as well, for plain text purists like myself. I have several project folders with txt files in it, and I would love to keep working on those projects and on the files as plain text.

As I envision it, the OPEN FOLDER AS PROJECT option would
1 > leave the folder structure as it is, with my plain text files in it
2 > silently insert and index the text contents of that folder in the database for fast searching and easier mass editing
3 > make the database the target of synchronization and that folder's folder text files the source, no questions asked

Now that would make me even happier than I am with WM3 – and I'm already exceedingly happy with it.

Cheers

Paulo

Stacy, as Paulo said, md files are text files. You'll find:

// when creating new files, use this extension
"files_default_extension": "md",

in the settings file. Change "md" to "txt" and all your new files will have the right extension.

Paulo, I intend to work on text files support of course, and something similar to OPEN FOLDER AS PROJECT will happen. I am glad to hear you still like wm3.

I can't find a way to rename the "file" SCRATCH.

I think the only thing I struggle with in WriteMonkey is that I can't find a simple tutorial that explains how to rename things.
