So, I just spent an hour writing something in WriteMonkey.

I am finally done. I select all the text. I go to do Control-C to
copy it.
I must of been pressing Fn-C instead, in the dark. I write in the
dark,
therefore the full screen wordprocessor.

Nothing happened, but all my text suddenly disappears. I don't know
what to do. In a panic, I alt-tab out of writemonkey, and kill the
process,
to keep its auto-save feature from writing over my last saved copy.

I then open my last saved copy, and its a blank. I look around
everywhere,
go through the menus, and see an Undo-Z feature. Ug, but its too
late,
I've already closed the app and reopened it.

With one effing accidental key stroke, all my work is gone, with no
way
to recover it. I don't even know if I can write it all again from
memory.
And quite frankly if you've ever been here, you're so pissed, you
don't want
to. Because you know it won't be as good as the first time around,
and your
finger are exhausted.

So yeah, computers, and wordprocessors, still stupid as hell.

If I had written it on paper, or with a typewriter, I would still have
it all.

WM has all of the standard safety features ... and more. There is a backup function in preferences / Open&save tab - wm will keep last 30 versions of any text you write. But yes, it is possible not to save your work as in any program. If you selected your text and incidentaly pressed fn+s, you entered letter s over your selected text. This is normal behavior. There is an Undo function (ctrl + z) for cases like that ...

I hope your second version is even better than the first one. And ... wm is not your enemy ;)

There could be an interesting feature here...

I guess WM could detect when a large amount of text is selected , and
then taking
care of what the user is going to do. So, WM could warn if you
suddenly type a single character over this large selection, or Ctrl-X,
or Del, or BackSpace... Or anything that will make the selection
disappear. The same way WM already does when you type Ctrl+N while
your current text is not saved, finally.

What about such an option ?

Just to make it more clear: generally, as in the case of choppergirl,
when we do a mistake, we enter a panic mode. And when we are in a
panic mode, generally, we do more mistakes. Such as saving the empty
text, or killing the process, or shutting down the computer...
Whatever... Having WM able to warn you before the very first mistake
is done would be great and a very new feature I didn't see anywhere
else.
