I am converting Microstation (.dgn) files to AutoCAD format (.dwg) using the export feature in Microstation. I've also tried using the import command in AutoCAD. When I open the converted file in AutoCAD, there are several line styles that are not displayed because they "cannot be resolved" in CAD. These line styles are installed in my Microstation workspace so I am wondering if there is a way to import these line styles into CAD? What are other solutions to try? Would it be too difficult to build my own line styles in case I can't import them from Microstation. I am a beginner/intermediate level AutoCAD user and a beginner Microstation user.

AutoCAD's linetypes are less robust than MicroStation's. If you open a DGN in AutoCAD, any simple linetypes should look correct. But AutoCAD is limited to dashes, dots, gaps, and text within linetypes, so if you have any line width variations or cells, etc. none of that will be able to correlate 1:1 into AutoCAD. I'd recommend starting with your own brand new .LIN file and learn the few simple rules for making line types in AutoCAD. Below is a breakdown of a non-text line type.

If the .rsc file that contains your special linestyles is in a location on the Acad search path when AutoCAD is started, then when you import a dgn file using those linestyles, they should come into the dwg file. And, once they are in the dwg file, you can use them for new geometry because there will be same-named Acad linetypes in the linetype table that are used to hook up to the dgn linestyle data that was imported into the dwg file.

I have a project that all our information has been put into MStation. The .tin, .prj, etc and need to create a Triangled Surface in Civil 3D. The main problem is not finding the .tin in Civil but its also asking me for a .pnt file. Is there a way around this or a simpler way to create a DEM model in Cilvil 3D? Thanks in Advance.

Thank you - I only have a 2D contour file and am not sure how to incorporate the Tin file to add the Z elevation - Otherwise I am importing the contours as a 2D file into Civil 3D with missing metadata or the .pnt file

If you have a TIN file in C3D you can create a DTM directly from the .tin file, just as Bill said. Otherwise it looks like yo are going to have to import the contours and elevate them, befor using them to create a DTM.

Thank you for all your help - I have tried most outlet (minus INRoads option) and still to no avial. I believe that the file size may be to large for my workstation. I even tried to take the information fro mthe .tin triagle file and export it use the Geographic Tools straight to a .kmz or .kml file for Google Earth. It is causing GE to lock up. I may need to break up the surfaces or try to create shape files and import those to Civil 3D.

I have all the info in my database if any of you would like the files (ie .tin, .prj, .dgn etc) - I could possible try to .zip and use dropbox. For now, yes as Calvin said, Back to my regularly scheduled headache.

Maybe one of you all can help with this info. Thank you all so much for your assistance. It just seems Civil 3D is having trouble importing these files no matter what kind of DTM option I have used in Microstation V8i.

barefootbob, depending what version of MicroStation you have you might have access to the new Data Acquisition tools. This will allow you to import and export multiple surface formats from many platform products.

I tried to import the small xml file you posted and it locked up Civil 3D on my beast of a PC. Check out my PC specs to the right (click on Computer Details) and you will see what I am using. I don't have time to play around with it due to a deadline.

I took the. tin file from the DTM mgr. (Geopak) and loaded independantly/created layers for the points, breaklines, and Hull, esentially creating three different levels/layers in the new .dwg file. This seems to be the biggest issue. But the solution = Create the blank .dwg in Civil FIRST.

I Saved the file and reopend the .dwg in C3D. I then created a new surface. In that new surface I used "add objects" to the surface. Since the point files were in txt format I selected each txt elevation as points. Z elevation and using a 1' - 5' diff. (background)- THIS WORKED!! Then I repeated the process by adding the Hull as the boundary and the Braklines and breaklines (polyline/smartlines).

Very tedious and frustrating, nonetheless - but all your suggestions have helped imensely. I have now been able to create the DEM I need to work with Map 3D and Civil 3D as well. WHEW!! - You guys are the best. Thanks again for all you help.

What is the problem? Any suggestions on how to import DXF files into
MapInfo?
Thanks

I would try 3DS or sketchup format if microstation can export that. You could try opening the exported IFC in something like BIMcollab Zoom to see if the file is correct. IFC should really be the safest option, so it is strange it doesn't give good results.

Linestyles can be delivered in the workspace two ways. One option is to point to the Linestyle resource file (RSC) using the variable MS_SYMBRSRC. The second options is to import a MicroStation linestyle resource file (RSC) into the DGN Library file and then use the MS_DGNLIBLIST variable.

Hi Bob, do you know if there is a key in command, or multiple key in commands that can achieve this. I have to do this for multiple drawings & models and using the batch processor will save a lot of time and energy

Hi Callum,
It appears that there are not the right combinations of straight keyins to accomplish this task. However I think you could do it using MVBA and then just call that macro as a keyin during the batch process. Let us know if you would like help with that.

I have a key-in that imports all linestyles in a .RSC file. all I do after initiating the key-in is select the rsc I wish to use.
this is quick when creating multiple linestyles in a project and getting them imported for use.

Lousy Option One produces a poorly formatted mess with no link back to the source file. You usually have to modify everything from the font, font size, row height and line thickness, to the size and overall orientation of the paste.

Have no worries about how to keep your Excel and Word data synchronized inside MicroStation. The Microsoft Office Importer software automatically links Excel and Word files to your DGN files when you do an import.

You've got a mess on your hands that can take hours to fix, but you don't have hours. We can be pretty sure that the deadline clock isn't going to politely stop ticking. (If you ever figure out how to make that happen, please let us know!)

Microsoft Office Importer saves you an astonishing amount of time by automatically managing all the little import-related details that must be just right, resulting in a paste that has impressively beautiful formatting.

Did you watch the video above? Did you see how effortlessly Microsoft Office Importer can split your gigantic spreadsheets to fit perfectly inside your DGN borders? That leaves the question: What about your header rows? You need them repeated all over the place now. No sweat. Microsoft Office Importer handles this for you automatically.

These MicroStation users would manually split up tall data into multiple pastes. Trying to do this is both time-consuming and frustrating. Simply changing text size is rarely an option as the text must be readable in the plot and must almost always follow a CAD standard that dictates the text size.

To be clear, this refers to columns in the design file, not Excel columns. The paste that Microsoft Office Importer splits into multiple columns can contain as many Excel columns and rows as you like.

Frozen might be great for a Disney princess, but for a MicroStation designer dealing with a raster image, it lacks all of the charm and the happy ending of a Disney movie. Let Microsoft Office Importer give you the heroic ending you deserve.

You also want to keep your DGN files up-to-date when your teammates (with or without telling you) make changes to your linked spreadsheets and documents. Getting rapid, accurate imports that are also linked to the source data leaves no room for software bugs or missing features.

"In the past, it would take one professional several days to get the job done. But when I used Microsoft Office Importer, I did it in half a day. Mine looked just as professional. So we have simply abandoned the old way of doing it.

In addition to handling spreadsheet and document pastes into MicroStation, Revit, AutoCAD and Civil 3D, Axiom has software that can make every aspect of your CAD work easier. For exampleTitle Block Manager helps you to automatically manage and update hundreds of title blocks in minutes.

Translation Manager is a go-to tool for engineers who need to get translations between MicroStation and AutoCAD done right the first time. For a look at all our applications, check the dropdown menu for MicroStation above.

I still have my old Microstation and normally saved a DWG version
for each old DGN Project, so no hurry from my side.
But I think it is a nice addition when it works from Bricscad too.
Some clients forget to export DWG and send DGN instead.
And much nicer if there is no more need to fire up a Parallels VM
Windows just for that.

I think Nemetschek Allplan was one of the few Apps that should
be able to read DGN. At the time I tried it was only possible for the
older Versions - before they changed their file format in the
late 90ies (For one time !)

The funny thing is that earlier this year I asked if DGN import was going to be implemented in the near future and the response from the local distributor was that this was not likely as there is no high demand for this but this could change if demand/requests increases. So it was a nice suprise to see DGN import being implemented. Hopefully they can fix the issue soon.
